I am really hoping that I can get a bit of help from some lovely nurses instead of bothering my non vetty husband all the time!

I started a new job a few days ago in a busy small animal practice that also does referral ultrasounds, orthopaedics

RE: Which job dilemma?

Thanks everyone, I didn't want to say in the original post (as I didn't want peoples opinions skewed) but I am also on a working holiday visa and want to see and explore the country as much as possible. So flexible hours and no weekends is ideal for me. Also the long term employment prospects are not an issue due to the length of the visa. locumming around isn't really an option as my partner has to stay in 1 area for his work.

I am worried I might get a bit bored in the maternity cover, as it is quite a small practice. But at the moment I am too tired and down when I get home to even think about going out to enjoy the area. I do enjoy learning new skills and being busy, but I kind of don't want to spend my whole evenings doing research whilst I am on a working holiday!

Also by getting older....I mean 31

RE: Which job dilemma?

Hi

Take the maternity contract as it sounds great. I'd love a 10 min walk to work instead of an hr long slog on the motorway everyday. I locumed at a practice around a yr ago that was local to me and had brilliant hours and they offered me a permanent job there.....I turned it down because my permanent job at the time paid better and was busier........

Life's too short to have regrets! Do what makes you happy

RE: Which job dilemma?

Hiya

I think you have answered your own question when you re-read your own post :)
I'd say do what your gut feeling tells you what you'd like to do.

And what you are suggesting is fair enough (staying on till the maternity cover one starts).

Good luck with such tough decisions!

RE: Which job dilemma?

I guess it depends on your financial situation. Will the mat leave cover ending be an issue if you aren't going straight into another job? Is long term security important?

Personally I'd take the mat leave one. You never know how long these things last for. Sometimes people don't come back from mat leave at all, or part time, meaning there could be a position for you.

I've been unhappy in a highly paid job and I'm currently ecstatic in a poorer paid job. Your team and your happiness are what matter most.

RE: Which job dilemma?

Do the maternity cover. As Veterinary nurses we always want to utilize our exceptional, and hard worked for skills, but job happiness is so important. The maternity cover sounds perfect for you - go for it!

RE: Which job dilemma?

My thoughts...

Team. Why don't you feel you fit in? Does the team feel closed? Maybe just very busy... Once you've been there a bit longer you'll automatically become that integral cog in the close knit team... It takes time. Bear with.

Travel. Yuck. Kills it for me. Local work always. Commuting is ex-bloody-hausting. Did it for years for a great job but can report will never do it again, whatever the incentive. IME it WILL get you down eventually. It's a barsteward especially when you're knackered, which for me was most of the time. I enjoyed the radio and wind-down in the car but realised I could walk home from work locally and do the same thing... Saved money, sanity and the planet.

QOL. Reach a certain age? Hell yes, that's very definitely the correct solution to any problem or conundrum. Go for QOL.

So. On average of the 3 categories identified. 2 say Go, 1 says Maybe Stay.

Just my opinion!!

Hth xx good luck and be happy

RE: Which job dilemma?

I would always try and give a new job at least two weeks before making any decision. There is always an adjustment period and its a lot of pressure to put on yourself to be fully integrated into a new team within a few days, especially if its a referral practice and therefore likely to be quite a lot of people!

I definitely agree with doing what makes you happy, just suggesting you give yourself a chance to figure out what that is!

RE: Which job dilemma?

Life's too short.
