Don't worry about it, it's mostly just box-ticking!

Make sure that you have a brief plan written down regarding what you are going to observe your student doing. Whilst you are being observed, make it clear to the student what you are asking them to do, and what they will need to do in order to pass (e.g. 'You will need to correctly set up the endoscope, and you will need to achieve these 5 steps in order to pass, as well correctly answering 5 questions')

The main thing that the college bods will want to see is that you have taken the time to plan it.

Clinical coach demonstration of setting up the side stream capnograph (moisture trap connected, connect sample line to luer fitting on moisture trap, connect airway adapter to sample line, connect large end of airway adapter to breathing circuit, connect small end of airway adapter to endotracheal tube, turn on monitor, connect exhaust hose to port on monitor, connect other end of exhaust hose to scavenge)
Maintaining the capnograph – prior knowledge review followed by CC demonstration
Student, when ready, to demonstrate setting up capnograph
Student to verbally answer 5 questions (attached) – all must be answered correctly to pass assessment.

What is the difference between copnography and capnometry?

What does capnometry measure?

State one advantage of using capnography over pulse oximetry

State at least 3 applications for capnography in veterinary practice (e.g. confirm ETT placement, CPCR, ventilator settings, ensure adequate flow rate, ensure safety and integrity of breathing circuit, as a guide for depth of anaesthesia, warnings re. Exhausted soda – lime etc.)

Describe the normal capnograph trace

Describe at least 2 abnormal capnograph traces

I am happy that the student has gained competency in setting up and using a capnograph, and has demonstrated a grasp of the basic underpinning knowledge associated with capnography
