I am curious to see how things will be different, but I mean, if you can collect blood, intubate, pill, calculate doses, etc, how different could all that be? I imagine that the day-to-day operation of a hospital and the roles could be different, though, and I was expecting that to be the greatest difference. Maybe I'm wrong--I guess I'll find out!

Whilst the RCVS is your first port of call I would also speak to the BVNA and the IVTNA ( International Veterinary Nurses and Technicians Association) as they will be able to give you area specific advice. There will be differences ( my friend who is a British VN has recently moved to Vancouver and has found it is quite differen't but actually she often gets to do MORE not less than we do here) and in Britain you get some practices where the nursing responsibilities are quite simple right through to very complex roles in bigger hospitals. It does , however, seem a huge shame to me that you might have to re-do the WHOLE course when you have already put in the work and achieved your qualification whilst in Canada . It is worth speaking to IVNTA to see whether your course is one that is eligible for the conversion exam rather than the whole course . Best of luck..ket us know how you get on XXX

Re: Canadian applies for QVN recognition...thoughts?

I moved to the UK after high school, so I didn't get the chance to work in practice in canada.
Hello,

I am a Canadian vet tech (registered) working in Nova Scotia (Canada), but my partner and I are moving to Scotland in the fall for his job. I recently applied to have my credentials recognized so that I may list myself on the nurses registry. I just got my reply back from the committee and am shocked to find they suggest I enroll as a student nurse and sit examinations. Gak!

I graduated from a Nova Scotian college that is recognized by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, had top grades and have passed the North American veterinary technician exam. I guess my question is: is this standard practice, for North American-trained nurses to have to enroll as students? Or could it be that our standards of practice are so vastly different that it is a genuine request?

Thoughts on all sides would be appreciated, as I plan to appeal the decision, if that is even possible :S

Thanks! Meg

[/quote]

I think it might sound really strange from over there. but honestly things are SOOO different over here. Being an American and working in veterinary care in the US and here in the UK the drug names and uses are different and procedures are very different. I think it would be very beneficial to you and your work to resit the exams. I got the impression from a friend that you didn't have to go through the whole course. But she was an equine nurse.
