When we have to dispose the CD, is that mean we have to go to different veterinary surgery to be witness that we dispose the CD into suitable waste? Or can be done at same vet surgery?
I see that you have disagreed with my comment. It would be really helpful if you could you say what it is you disagree with. I believe that what I have written is a correct representation of the law and professional guidance. Of course if I've made a mistake I would like to be corrected. It will help me and others if you can say why you disagree.

RE: Dispose OOD controlled drugs

Hi

A vet from another practice, who is independent of your practice (see below), can come to your practice to witness the destruction.

All CDs must be denatured before disposal. Having an authorised witness of the denaturing is a legal requirement for Schedule 2 CDs that are part of the practice's stock (i.e. expired, unwanted). Witnessing is not a legal requirement for patient-returned CDs or for Schedule 3 and 4 CDs, but the BSAVA recommends that it is good practice for all CDs to be dealt with in the same way (i.e. witnessed destruction). The witness can be:

• An Inspector appointed under the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (this includes a VMD inspector or RCVS Practice Standards Assessor)

• A veterinary surgeon independent of a practice where the destruction takes place (including those who have no personal, professional or financial interest in the veterinary practice where the drug is being destroyed but excluding temporary staff and family members)

• A person legally authorised to witness the destruction of CDs.

RE: Dispose OOD controlled drugs

could invite a vet round from neighbouring practice and then do the same for them. We had a somebody from the cop shop across the car park come and do ours - but we did it wrong it can't be any old copper, the police bod has to be a special police bod and there are only a few in the country.
