I'm intrigued and looking for opinions from you lovely bunch. I would like to know if you could have a wish list of equipment within practice (don't worry about the budget) what would it be?
When you buy new pieces of equipment

RE: Interested to know thoughts from others on new equipment purchasing

On site CT & MRI and it be reasonably priced so can be used on most cases
An interesting answer. Is there a consumable cost with either technology? We have a stupidly cheap rate for radiographs on things like lambs with broken legs as there is no actual cost to me.

That said, I'm not sure I can think of a dozen animals in my career that I'd want to MRI. Maybe more uses for CT, but we are really dropping into luxury type diagnostics - it doesn't really hamper repairing a #leg not to be able to view it in 3D.

If you know about the ecomonics, if you could do 4X as many CT scans, could you do them at 1/2? 1/3? the cost?
i guess it depends on the case you see. Working for a larger OOH hospital we see a large number of neurological patients. We also need the back up of a neurologist which doesn’t come cheap either.

Both modalities make for easier and quicker diagnosis particular CT when it comes to identifying IOHC and bony changes such as tumours as well as picking up metastatic speard as much smaller nodules can be detected before they are picked up on rads.

Regarding ecconomics. It comes down to the original out lay in cost and maintenance as well as staff training. And they are always costs included such as the price of a ga and interpretation if not done on site. Consumables include iv catheter, contrast, isoflurane, oxygen, fluid therapy etc. And things still need to be kept profitable.

RE: Interested to know thoughts from others on new equipment purchasing

I think the majority of nurses have a pretty long list!

Cost is obviously a huge factor, but when I'm helping with purchasing we always balance that with customer service. There are a few companies we won't go near due to bad previous experiences, and we'd rather pay a little extra to a company we have a good relationship with. Preloved is always great! There doesn't seem to be an easy way of getting preloved stuff though, so new is more commonly the way to go.

RE: Interested to know thoughts from others on new equipment purchasing
On site CT & MRI and it be reasonably priced so can be used on most cases
