Ideas for 5 year olds!

I've been asked to go into a primary school and talk for about 45 mins to 5-6 year old children and the guidance is "more information about how to look after animals and a little bit about the structure of different animals"

you aren't wrong I went to one school expecting a nice quiet class and ended up doing a school assembly. There seemed to be hundreds of them all sat cross legged staring me out with the teachers all along the back of the hall. I didn't ask if anybody had any questions at the end

But seriously apart from very few occasions when I just wanted the ground to swallow me and one which will haunt me to my dying day I really liked doing these - get em young enough and you can really make a difference. Hope I haven't embarrassed her but one of my Brownies from years ago is now a vet nurse and comes on here!

This was at a museum event

' Is that baby chicken dead?' 'Mum, Mum, Mum, that baby chicken is dead' 'Mum is she going to bury it?'- there were some chicks under a lamp and I thought I had inconspicuously retrieved one which wasn't looking so happy but hadn't bargained on the eagle eyed child with the big mouth.

Don't know if it is still around but there used to be something called The Blue dog which was really useful in showing children how to behave around dogs

RE: Help! I also microchipped a toy cat and scanned it afterwards to lots of “woah!”. Kids are fascinated with animals but like you Sal i found they all wanted to ask about death and their own pets dying show no fear! You can do a lot with picture cards and a few props. i also took in some empty tablets packets and a few dressings, stethoscope, and a brand new , unused thermometer just in case it ended up in somebodies mouth. We did a bit of a talk - ie what does this one eat and where do you think it lives and in the case of hamster and GP and rabbit got them to make a house up (teachers loved me with the straw) wouldn't allow it with one group as there was a child 'with allergies' but on the whole went down quite well. Just a bit of a warning one of the the last groups I worked with there was quite a bit of spare time and I asked them if they wanted to ask me anything - first one was why had his fish died and when his mum had flushed it down the toilet would the big fish in the sea eat him? every single one of the little ghouls after that had a question about death!

Empty tablet pots (carefully cleaned) empty packets etc and dressings - I think they have a project at about that age on a vets surgery. You can let them listen to their own hearts but take some wipes to clean ear pieces in between or it wont be allowed - well that was the case when I did it ( I was probably more at risk from them than they were from me, lets face it children are bug factories)

I used to like doing these - could be a bit daunting at times , but nothing like starting them young in good habits
