Yep, it's recognised, get in contact with the RCVS, u need to get a letter of good standing from the SAVC and pay about 90 pounds to the RCVS to be added to the register of veterinary nurses over here, we do not need to sit any exams. Can work once registered. Think u generally have to get it all done before coming over, easy to do

I did a couple of sessions at OP as well (I used to be in the SA military), so know the setup there, pretty same standard as here in the UK.

More than likely you would have to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (our governing body) http://www.rcvs.org.uk/Templates/Internal.asp?NodeID=90637?NodeID=93831 at the bottom of this link there are contact details for the VN dept.

All the university hospitals in the UK all have Equine dept. There is London (Potters Barr), Cambridge, Bristol, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Glasgow. There are quite a few Equine hospitals about too.

Thanx Shane, Where exactly does one register?

Might I also pick your wealth of knowledge on where an equine vet nurse who has worked exclusively with horses for the past 13 years within Onderstepoort might start looking for an equivalent in the UK? Preferably within a teaching hospital. But prepared to look elsewhere too.

No, wasnt admitted twice, only once. Couldnt be my boy who was grumpy :) Everyone loved him, he is the kindest horse i have ever known :) Even when being tubed and scoped, all without a twitch.

Wasnt Kaleva admitted twice? Im sure I have a picture of him somewhere... although I also might have him confused with another chestnut with a stripe, that became very grumpy once he started getting better...

I would love to and i looked at every option under the sun, but because i do not have matric science or biology i cannot get in. This course i am on now counts 50 % towards an RCVS qualification and i am hoping that should i go the vet route i will be able to get on with this qualification im doing now. I am 33, bit too old me thinks, but will see. Also because i am originally from the UK, i cannot get into OP as i do not have a second language.

No they dont have the degree program running yet, I am looking forward to it as well. There should be an option available to overseas nurses too to complete the degree via correspondance.

Why didnt you decide to become a vet after having seen Kaleva whisked off to theatre? Its the surgeons who have the life saving skills, and the theatre sisters assist, the medicine clinician/doctorsthat practices life saving post op treatment and the clinic sister assists with nursing care.

No, not at OP because they do not offer an equine specific course. It was actually that day that my horse went into surgery that i stood there realising i am in the wrong job... so at this late stage in my life (well i consider it late lol) i have done the career change thing and started studying in January this year. Am studying with a college in the UK and in line with the RCVS. Write my first exam in November then onto the advanced course next year. Then i want to go onto the degree program either at OP or in the UK - but not sure if OP have their vet nursing degree program running yet.
