I have been a locum nurse but unfortunately I have gone through a few really bad months not going into to much details and my mental health began to suffer to the point of feeling suicidal! unfortunately before Christmas I had to cancel several

RE: STRUGGLING TO GET WORK! Following taken from RCVS Code of Professional conduct

'5.2 Veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses should not speak or write disparagingly about another veterinary surgeon or veterinary nurse. Colleagues should be treated fairly, without discrimination and with respect, in all situations and in all forms of communication.'

Could you offer some time to a practice as a work trial or voluntary? I did this when I was a trainee wanting a place and the only jobs available were for qualified. I got to do my second year and qualified this way.

or could you manage to do maybe a part time 'anything' job in the week and see if you can pick up maybe a weekend cover nursing job. That way you have some income coming in and the ability to rebuild that way?

The one thing I would try and make sure of is that you are really ready to make a comeback and not put yourself under too much pressure too soon - if it means doing a non nursing job for a while to get you back on a level its not a bad thing. Whatever you decide is right for you - keep talking to somebody.

feel free to pm me if you think it will be useful.

You have to remember people book locums in advance and they can be hard to obtain and book for specific dates. You have to appreciate that the practice may be left badly understaffed/have to cancel ops/make people cancel or change holidays etc. There is a huge hassle, disruption and potential cost implication. Veterinary is a small industry and people do talk.

Is there anywhere that you have locumed who are looking for staff (where you could see yourself working)? Have there been any places you have worked that were especially nice/supportive? I feel the environment is vital for you. I think you need to sit down and explain your situation, but also sell your positives. Lots of people are crying out for nurses. I'm sure you have a lot to offer in the right environment.

I'd rather employ a nurse who was 100% honest and needed a bit more support, than have no nurse. Cards on the table and complete honesty.
