I am just looking for any advice as not sure what to do...
I am in rock and hard place at the moment, been a veterinary nurse nearly 8 years now. Have locumed 3 years and have a range of experience. I am just finding myself bored and

RE: REFERRAL NURSING!!!

Hi

IMO cleaning is an important part of the role of an rvn! Plus legally anyone can monitor a GA provided the vet is happy - it's not a S3 procedure.

Referral nursing isn't all its cracked up to be! Having worked in both I can honestly say that where I work now in first opinion actually provides a much higher level of nursing care than 2 out of the 3 referral practices I've worked at!

In one I was left holding a dyspnoeic dog who was turning purple in front of me with no oxygen supply, no IV and no vet as they chose to go see the non life threatening emergency v+ dog rather than deal with the inpatient! It was a real eye opener.

Maybe the issue you have is with your current practice and not with first opinion. There's plenty of things you could do to try to improve your own job satisfaction such as study something new and then implement changes in the practice from your new knowledge.

I'm a firm believer in that the more you put in the more you get out.

RE: REFERRAL NURSING!!!

I went straight in the deep end and took a referral job as soon as I qualified nearly 4 years ago!

I resonate with what has been said above, referral is structured and the teams supportive. I only knew day one skills when I went into referral, and i wasn’t the most confident in my skills, but my fab team taught me so so much and I never felt out of my depth, I always had someone there to help or ask questions if needed.

I’m not in referral now as I’m pursuing exotics nursing now but I do greatly miss it. No doubt I will return to it one day!

RE: REFERRAL NURSING!!!

I moved to referral a year and a half ago. It was exactly what I needed to find my love for nursing again. They have a well structured training program and are really supportive, after all they want to keep you!! They are always happy for nurses to have a look around. I thoroughly recommend it. I've learnt so SO much. If you have any questions, feel free to message me :)

RE: REFERRAL NURSING!!!

I find that a few days at BSAVA each year is pretty invigorating! Plenty to learn, nice 45minute lectures giving you what you need to know - I always come away feeling refreshed and ready to get going again!

Don't be daunted by the prospect of referral nursing!

..And in 20 years time mopping the floors will be a welcome relief from monitoring general anaesthetics :)

RE: REFERRAL NURSING!!!

It sounds like you are looking for more than your current job can offer you. Why not write to referral centres to ask about vacancies or even seeing practice?
