I was also given a present to open on Christmas morning by the other nurses, so I felt like Santa hadn't missed me out.

[/quote]

one place I worked we used to have a sort of pass the parcel. The parcel was made up by the boss and even if he wasn't working Christmas day he used to drop by about 11am ish' on his way to church' - he wasn't remotely religious so no idea what his 'church ' was , the parcel usually started off in reception and was passed around the building to every member of staff that was at work during the course of the morning(usually about 1/2 dozen of us), sometimes more than once. In among the layers could be anything ie money, voucher for a restaurant, voucher for a pamper session, car valet, stethoscope, nice pen,fob watch that sort of thing but everybody got something (along with a task). My task was usually fixed. I had to go round to the next door neighbours with a bottle of whisky and wish them a happy Christmas. I got the job because I don't drink and was the only one guaranteed to come out out of the neighbours sober and walking in a straight line.

I remember one year we had a locum vet and their layer contained a surgical glove full of cat litter. We had to really convince them they should open it (they thought it was going to be something horrible) inside was a key ring wrapped in a £20 note.

He must have spent ages making his parcel and getting things together, and there was always a well stocked buffet in the upstairs kitchen. Strangely enough we never had any problems getting people to volunteer for working Christmas

This was the same place where you used to get 'staff meeting - date/time, bring a change of clothes' written on the ops board periodically. I remember the first one was Line dancing and a bbq while a neighbouring practice covered our phones

RE: Christmas 2018

I got invited to Aileen's for dinner.

Aileen is a fabulously full-on Scottish Party Animal and it was FAB-U-LOUS darling. Best Crimble din-dins and knees up I've ever had. I was sat between a one-legged argumentative uncle and her elderly grand-aunt who demanded brandy (with a hint of watttter) and told me all about her wicked youth (wink wink - OMDays she'd been a girl!). Plus a terrorising, grumpy and generally "I DO IT MYYYYYY WAY SOYOU CAN FLIP OFF" Shih Tsu (sadly now in heaven - I miss those snarly little choppers).

When I got back to my one in-patient, I was able to bless him with a few turkey left-overs and was rewarded with a very wagging bottom and lots of licks. (He was just boarding over the festive period so leaving him for a couple of hours was fine, I'll add). Plus Aileen's was literally "jest duuwn the rrrrroad, hen"

I was also given a present to open on Christmas morning by the other nurses, so I felt like Santa hadn't missed me out.

So, the moral of my yarn it this...make it a special day for your on-call or in-situ nurse and they will remember it (and you) very fondly for decades. Yeah man!!

Aileen - you're a LEGEND!
