Our clinic shares on call duties with another two clinics so fortunately we dont have to do a lot of on call (one night

RE: On Call Advice

my old practice was a 15 min car ride away, but I didn't drive. so that I could be on call(I cycled the 4 miles to work ), I would stay in the practice accommodation every time. was a bit of a pain if im honest, as I had two children who were very young that I had to find childcare for! AT This practice, I live half hour away. so when im on call, if the vet gets a call in, and im likely to be needed, I get called straight away, so we both get there in about 20-30 mins.i don't think its right to call another nurse in, and I also don't think its right to change this persons contract, and I feel it could potentially end up being taken to hr as discrimination, as it is singling this person out.Why not suggest she stays onsite?

RE: On Call Advice
If they have to wait then diddums.
And totally agree with Sal.... If they have to wait then diddums.

Realistically most things don't need a nurse unless it's something I'm going to GA.

If something needs surgery then the vet can always pre-med and get things ready for when the nurse arrives.

RE: On Call Advice

well if you insist she stays overnight at the practice then that should apply to everybody on their on call evening. If you remove her from the rota then anybody can then request they are removed for whatever reason. Contract change - be very careful. If this nurse was taken on it was accepted that she lived further away but was still able to get there within a stipulated time was it not?

Your problem here is that people aren't observing a rota. How many times has it genuinely been necessary to call out a nurse living closer? - and how many times genuinely would that extra few minutes have had an impact on the outcome for the emergency being dealt with?

Do your vets live on site or are they called in to deal with emergencies and if so are they all attending within 10-15 minutes? or are they taking longer.

I used to get this all the time when I lived above the shop ie a phone call one night asking me to set up fluids and get theatre ready for an RTA before the vet had even seen the dog - shame I was on holiday in Scarborough at the time. People will always use you if you make yourself too convenient
