I have been working in charity clinics for the past couple of years (have previously worked in a couple of private practices before this). Which I do enjoy, and love being able to do as much as we can to help animals when normally finances would

RE: Going from charity to referral?

It has been a long time but I went from a charity hospital with all the bells and whistles (embarrassingly so) to referral. Biggest differences I noticed (and you have already touched on one) is that in referral you are working within a budget and some of the stuff you might take for granted in charity doesn't always get done in referral because it is charged and there are times when people run out of money or insurance that an animal may be pts. The other major difference for me was a lack of contact with clients. I didnt really enjoy it too much as I like to move through various areas of a practice according to rota and see everything rather than just one part. It didn't really suit me I found myself becoming bored if I'm honest

RE: Going from charity to referral?

Hi,

i have no experience going from charity to referral but i went but I went straight from passing my osces to a referral practice. I was also in my 30s when I qualified.

I’ve now worked in several and they provide train and I’ve found them to be quite supportive. Also they tend to have specific nursing roles and I’ve never had to do anything beyond ward nursing which means no lab etc. So depending on your area of interest you may never encounter certain things. I’ve not done lab/anaesthesia/surgery for 4 years.

In my training practice iwe had no fancy equipment but they teach you to use them. I’d say go for it! Id never go back to first opinion.
