Well, just deployed the latest site upgrade and it's a bigun:

a) Job section, given the job list a freshen up. Now a bit less 'list-like' and more of a presentation of individual job adverts. What do you think? Notice the difference?!

b) The page title bar now scrolls down the page with you in various sections, meaning the claim cpd button follows you down. Hopefully this will remind you to record time spent towards your CPD allowance, particularly in view of the latest news from the college today: https://www.vetnurse.co.uk/b/veterinary-nursing-news/archive/2019/02/14/rcvs-cracks-down-on-vet-nurses-who-don-39-t-keep-up-with-cpd.aspx

c) and lastly, but nevertheless most bigly, the tools I need to change the entire structure of the site into interest-based groups, as mentioned above, designed to help those of you with common interests collaborate. I'll make an announcement when the first one is ready to see. Thinking which one to kick off with. I think it's probably between diagnostic imaging and ... um ... anaesthesia.

Another update and another delay after we discovered some glitches that needed ironing out ...

But, nearly ready to go now and I have been setting up some of the new groups.

They're divided into clinical and non clinical.

The clinical ones are:

Small Animal Anaesthesia
Small Animal Behaviour
Small Animal Dentistry
Small Animal Dermatology
Small Animal Diagnostic Imaging
Small Animal Emergency & Critical Care
Small Animal Medical Nursing
Small Animal Physiotherapy
Small Animal Surgical Nursing and Theatre Practice
Small Animal Would Management
Exotics
Equine

The idea is that the exotics and equine groups are 'cover all' areas relating to those species, whereas the small animal group subdivides into all those disciplines.

Then we can see where things take us, and if there is a demand to subdivide exotics into different disciplines, we can do that later.

Does that list look good, everyone? Am I missing anything?

An update ... it has taken longer than expected, these things always do, but we're very nearly ready to roll out the new VetNurse special interest subject groups. We installed them on VetSurgeon first, have identified a few small glitches. Developers say the fixes should be ready today, so allowing a few days for set up, you should start seeing something next week ...

The plan is to keep the existing presentation more or less unchanged (ie all forums in one area, all news in another, all jobs in another, all events in another and all gallery images in another) ... but to curate that information into the named categories so that if the reader wants, they can (for example), visit the dermatology section and JUST see forum discussions, news stories, gallery images and possibly events relating to that subject, and I'm hoping we might be able to display jobs according to whether they have a bias in particular areas.

It's something extra, rather than changing the way things are now, and I hope it will be useful especially for those that really want to focus on one subject area (which could be for a number of reasons, of course).

Thanks Sal, but I wonder if that is a bit unspecific? Thinking about it, I wonder whether I should take one of the existing forum titles and make it the name of a more all encompassing subject (like 'Life in Practice'). Or maybe 'Practice Matters'. Actually, what do you think of that? I think that would work quite logically (ie those 'non-clinical' subjects above would sit nicely under that heading, apart from off-duty).

Do you think the ones I had already proposed would sit well alongside those? I've also looked at the existing forum categories and added those.

So our clinical list would be:

Medical Nursing
Surgical Nursing / Theatre Practice
Emergency and Critical Care Nursing
Wound Management
Anaesthesia
Dermatology
Physiotherapy
Diagnostic Imaging
Feline Nursing
Small Furries and Exotics Nursing
Equine Nursing
Nurse Clinics

I'm wondering whether anaesthesia should fall under surgical nursing and theatre practice? (better to start with broader groups and then sub categorise as needed).

I think this is taking shape. Jo, training will come under non-clinical, which I will come to in a minute.

Other than that, do you think it would be useful to come to the site and be able to see everything, OR to be able to go to your area of special interest (one of those above), and see/subscribe to news, forum discussions, gallery images for just that subject area, too.

I'm thinking we might even ask employers to categorise jobs when they post them too, so jobs which include those elements are displayed in the respective sections.

In short, we start categorising ALL clinical information on the site according to those section titles. Do you think that works? Are we missing anything that wouldn't fit under any of these headings?

A bit off topic, but yes, I know what you mean. I think sometimes people forget it is normal to struggle, to feel down, stressed and sometimes overwhelmed without needing to give it a clinical title. And I am not for one second diminishing the seriousness of mental illness.

Back to the point ... as regards non-clinical, I guess the issue here is that the non-clinical subjects are likely to have less content (eg gallery images and news) in addition to forum discussions.

So I think they need to be much broader subject areas. I was going to say perhaps even calling a group Non-clinical (although I don't much like that name), and include within it the following forums:

Life In Practice
Off Duty
Practice Management
Nurse Training
HR and Employment
Problem Pages (we might rename this)

All non-clinical news and gallery images would also be included.

But I'm struggling to think of a title which says 'anything to do with non-clinical aspects of the job' without calling it a non-something :)

Hmm - I was kind of thinking of the various aspects of treatment/work, so that, for example, you could come to the small animal wound management section and find everything in one place - wound management news (like new products), wound management discussions, wound management images etc.

I think from the categories you have plus a few extras you have probably covered the clinical side pretty well - and its the non clinical side that could do with a bit of expansion as our role in practice appears to have changed. Now that nurses are being turned into pen pushers and veterinary staff generally into touchy feely hug buddies (don't get me wrong there is a need, there is a problem - just not to the extent its being pushed at the minute). All of a sudden its fashionable to be self obsessed, to have angst- its like you aren't normal if you aren't depressed/stressed/overwhelmed/struggling (delete as applicable or add to the list) ,as a therapist I should be pleased with this but actually I'm not - to some extent I think it can trivialise those that have problems and are really struggling and may make it more difficult for them to access help when they really need it.

Well, over on vetsurgeon, i am doing as follows:

Small Animal
Anaesthesia
Cardiology
Clinical Pathology
Dentistry
Dermatology
Diagnostic Imaging
Medicine
Neurology
Oncology
Opthhalmology
Othopaedics
Soft Tissue Surgery

I've been wondering whether I should mirror those over here, it's just that over here they will obviously have more of a nursing slant. But then I was thinking that some of these subjects are probably ones you don't get involved with in the sort of depth that justifies a group with news/forum discussions/image galleries etc.

Anaesthesia, Dermatology, Diagnostic Imaging are standing out to me as ones where nurse input/interest is especially high, where, for example, neurology/oncology perhaps not????

Geriatrics is an interesting idea, because as you say it encompasses lots of things ...

Not sure about diabetes being its own subject area, though. I know it is a big important subject, but I'm not sure if there would be enough unique diabetes related content (images, news and forum discussions) to populate its own section.
