I would second the Kookaburra page as it is a very good source of info and adverts. They are very clued up and organised.

I thought I'd respond to this from two viewpoints. First as a UK citizen (aged 45) who has worked abroad recently (albeit in the animal welfare NGO field rather than directly using my VN qualification). I post this after 2 years in an EU country managing an animal shelter and now 24 hours before a flight from the UK to my next 2 year gig.

The main thing to bear in mind is to consider (1) does a VN profession exist where you are heading and (2) do you have functionality there without being fluent in the local language,

That immediately narrows things for you to mainly English-Speaking countries on both counts - Aus, NZ, Canada, US etc as well as some countries (notably Middle East) where the clinical environment works in English. Also a few ex-colonies (Malta, Papua New Guinea, Belize etc) where English is a main working language.

In a lot of other countries bear in mind that if there is no structured and regulated nursing profession then salaries will be very low and there is little incentive to employ a qualified person.

I;ve just finished 2 years in Malta which has English as an official language and working in an NGO that functions in English rather than Maltese. I very much doubt I would be able to function effectively in a nursing role (although manh do) without some Maltese. The salaries in clinics are low - we pay our lay animal carers in the shelter more than a lot of clinic nurses get.

As an employer, the process of filling a vacancy with a work permit or licence holder is very unappealing - if you are taking on someone who requires a work permit then the process in most cases requires proving there isn't a local qualified and capable of doing the job (not necessarily a better candidate - just able to meet the role). So wherever possible, filling existing vacancies is often done with existing nationals / residents etc where possible. For new job roles rather than replacements, then it may be different.

THE OTHER THING I would recommend is doing some serious googling for vacancies. My new job in Bermuda which I start on Tuesday is somewhere I originally worked a few years ago, and I found it on my previous stint, by googling keywords and making direct contact with a CV. My recent stint in Malta came about from contacting someone in the charity who I had met at conferences.

Do have a think about places that maybe don't "grow" their own VNs, Bermuda is a great example of this, there are 4 vet clinics all of whom advertise for nurses a few times a year (Endsmeet has an advert live right now). Lots of small islands are similar.

On the voluntary side of things, especially in asia, these may be unpaid because wither the local economics don't support a salary OR there is no prospect of getting a work visa for salaried employment for a non-local. Some of the places concerned will offer food, accommodation and expenses at local rates. One or two may on the QT arrange for you to be paid through the UK (technically illegal).

Hope that helps.

RE: Oldies working abroad

Hi Sarah Lou!

You could try www.kookaburravets.com which is mostly jobs in Australia and New Zealand but does have jobs worldwide. There's also a worldwide section on the jobs page on this site which has jobs from time to time. There is a new site called www.thevetmap.com which will eventually have job opportunities all over the world, but it is very new and I don't think there's very much on it yet, worth keeping an eye on.

In terms of volunteer work, there is so so so much out there! Check out the Veterinary Volunteering facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/655751167945937/) and either search for previous posts or ask for specific advice.

Best of luck and hopefully you find something!

RE: Oldies working abroad

I guessed that

I am just feeling old at the minute - surgery on a knackered hip next week (and its only old people who need hip surgery?so I will be in the company of loads of geriatrics) and heard this week that my former head nurse has just died. But looking on the bright side I got cheaper house insurance for the over 50's so there has to be some plus points - And I am still more active than some I work with that are younger than me by 20 -30 yrs
