Can you go into detail?
Been in practices with the bitching which is good not to get involved in and been some horrible situations which gender has been used against me.
Again, please expand on this. There will always be a bit of bitching/banter in any workplace.
We are all different shapes and sizes
Yup. So long as that doesn't interfere with us doing the job it's ok. I know a story about a rather obese vet who got in the floor to calve a cow and it took 3 farmers to get her back to her feet! There is a degree of strength and fitness required for a physical job like this.
so should just look at your team as another work colleague.
I'd consider most of the people I work with as friends.

RE: Working with Male RVNs

Another male RVN here.

Gender shouldn't be an issue with the job but yeah it has been a lot to me over 10 years with some of the stuff I've had to put up with.

Been in practices with the bitching which is good not to get involved in and been some horrible situations which gender has been used against me.

We are all different shapes and sizes but all have the same focus of helping animals so should just look at your team as another work colleague.

I think we are seeing more male nurses coming into practice and I see that as a good thing - I like the idea of having that different viewpoint, and feel it benefits practices a lot and I do think we need to get past the female strangle hold we have in this job sometimes.

RE: Working with Male RVNs

I've worked with several male VN's (both straight and gay - just putting it out there;) )

No major problems with any of them...I've actually enjoyed working with most of them,

Disadvantages - none really I think as I am an "older" nurse and have always looked a bit older I have never really had clients talk past me to the male nurses.

Advantages - I have suffered with back and knee issues since my teens so having a male nurse around (especially in a mainly female practice) does help with the whole lifting and manual handling situation (seems a bit sexist this but lets face it most men are stronger than us women)
I think clients are becoming more used to seeing male nurses (both in veterinary and human worlds) so those looks should hopefully be becoming fewer and further between.
We all get asked when we are going to be vets - this will only change when we educate the public.

RE: Working with Male RVNs

I have worked with a few male nurses - haven't really come across any problems with one exception - and it wasn't really a problem, that was the clients always looked straight past me and spoke to the trainee male nurse. I found it quite amusing to be honest although he was my trainee and I was head nurse he obviously had greater presence. Certainly wasn't anything I couldn't live with - it was good to have a break from taking the flak sometimes and he did it with such style. We had the nickname 'the Two Ronnies' and worked together really well - still friends now.

RE: Working with Male RVNs

ive never personally worked with a male nurse however, rest assured, its not just the male ones that get asked if you are "training to be a vet" its probably the most annoying question around
