I am just looking for some advice on cleaning a pen of a rabbit after coccidia. I am assuming that a QAC would be the best solution to use. What QACs are people using and does anyone know this is the best solution for cleaning after coccidia

RE: Cleaning protocols- coccidia and Quaternary Ammonium Compounds

Hi, this is very good, made by Hysolv.
® concentrate is available for commercial users who wish to treat larger surface areas

e.g. small holdings, quarantine/breeding kennels/runs/yards, veterinary establishments, stables etc.

Directions for use

Interkokask RTU is a surface disinfectant and should NOT be used while the animal is still present.

The disinfectant should be left in contact with the housing for up to 2 hours.

500mls of Interkokask RTU is sufficient to cover approximately 5 square metres.

1 litre Interkokask concentrate will treat up to 125 square metres (1,350 square feet).

• Remove all bedding, food, drinking equipment etc.

In vivariums, special care should be taken to remove any absorbent materials (wooden or

other porous materials) prior to disinfection. Clean surfaces thoroughly.

• Apply Interkokask RTU from a distance of 30 cm (12 inches) so that the surface is wet. Be

sure to treat all cracks, crevices and holes.

• Leave for 30 minutes if treating against bacteria, viruses or fungi, otherwise leave for 2 hours.

Rinse the surfaces with clean water. Vivariums must be rinsed thoroughly.

• Water, bedding, food, equipment etc and animals can be replaced when surfaces are dry.

Use biocides safely.

Always read the label and product information before use!

• Usual safety precautions should be observed when handling chemicals.•

Chlorocresol can cause an allergic reaction.

• If swallowed seek medical advice immediately and show this leaflet.

• Avoid direct contact with cats and fish.

Perhaps somebody can come up with the name?

RE: Cleaning protocols- coccidia and Quaternary Ammonium Compounds

Hi Apache,

Thank you so much for your reply. I had not heard of this lack of efficiency, do you know of any articles out there? I guess kilcox is a better as its a combination of QAC, phenol, and glutaraldehyde. The pens in question are plastic.

Thank you so much for your advice!

RE: Cleaning protocols- coccidia and Quaternary Ammonium Compounds

I was under the impression that QACs had no (meaningful) activity against coccidia.

There are some specific products that exist with activity against cocci (Kilcox, Bioocyst), but I'm not sure what you mean when you say you want to clean "a pen"? If there is wood or organic material involved you'd be better burning it and starting again. You can't get rid. If a stainless or plastic vet cage then use a specific disinfectant.

Cocci is the bane of the outdoor pig industry - they move entire site every few years once the levels of cocci become so high they affect production.
