After nearly a year of searching and applying, I've finally been lucky enough to secure a nursing assistant position at a wonderful veterinary hospital!
A little background about myself - I am

RE: Starting new career in veterinary practice

Hi! I started out very similarly to you, did Biomedical Science at uni and then moved into veterinary when I was 25. I agree with the advice already given, just ask questions and get involved. Most practices will have individual cleaning protocols whether they are a large hospital or a tiny private practice so I'm sure someone will go through these with you. You truthfully do learn something new in veterinary practice every day so don't be discouraged when you don't pick everything up on day 1. If you make a mistake just hold up your hands and learn from it because we all do it, we're all human! Just enjoy it, if you're passionate about it that will shine through. Good luck!

RE: Starting new career in veterinary practice

Hello there Sian, thank you so much for your warming reply!

I will definitely be asking a lot of questions (even if they seem silly to me). Perhaps I will bring a notepad for the first few days.

I'm confident with most cleaning required in practice, but within a large veterinary hospital I do wonder if there will be a major difference? I know that with footwear, we need to bathe them before entering any of the theatres, which is not something I have experienced previously (though I've always considered that necessary in a sterile environment).

Yes, I agree on your sentiment with clients. I am aware that I have a lot to learn over the next few years (and more, hopefully!) and it is essential that we give the most suitable advice.

Thankfully I am a lot more organised and work-focused than I was 8 years ago starting out at university.. I am looking forward to studying at college and will work hard, for sure.

Thank you again for your brilliant advice Sian, much appreciated.

RE: Starting new career in veterinary practice

Congratulations on your new job and welcome!

My best advice for you really is to get stuck in! Don't be afraid to ask questions always keep busy. If you find yourself in a lull of quiet moment then find out what else you could be doing as there are always things to clean, washing to be done, drapes to be de-furred etc.

Find out what the daily tasks are such as making up flea and worm treatments or bagging up bird seed and keep on top of them.

If you're speaking to a client and they're asking for advice, always ask for someone else's help and opinion so they're getting the correct advice or only advise on what you know is factual.

Other than that, I hope you enjoy your new career and don't forget to study hard when you start college!
