and that is the problem - they have been too freely available, to a whole load of people who should never have had access to them, they haven't always been used for the right reasons - so now the only way they can be 'regulated' is a blanket ban

RE: at last!
I've been zapped by a ring fence - cor lummee it made my teeth zing-a-zig-zag and I ached all over for a good few hours. Not as bad as the time I stuck a screwdriver into an electric socket and was thrown across the room (don't ask - but I defo learned a lesson THAT day!). So, I can say at first hand that ANY electric shock/zap is horrible to have and definitely marks one's psyche for life.

I know that people do use ring-fencing to control/marshal horses and live-stock - you see those dastardly white tapes everywhere... I think it's nasty.

In the days when I used to shoot I can remember one gallant gentleman attempting to push down some sheep netting with the barrel so I could step over it without getting zapped ( you don't go traipsing across a bloody field with a loaded gun or barrel that isn't broken or point it anywhere that isn't upwards or away from anything you don't want to shoot- you just don't!!! )..... the kickback dislocated his already damaged shoulder.
The benefits never outweigh their use. If we've reached the stage where it's a shock collar or PTS, then I don't see how torturing and terrifying a dog into doing the 'right' thing is more ethical than euthanasia. Being dead is not a welfare concern, being alive is.

RE: at last!
I see it's only remote controlled shock collars that have been banned, not 'invisible fences'.

[/quote]

to me its just the collars that needed banning - having seen one dog with damage to its neck that was so bad it required extensive debride and a skin graft and another dog that was so neck shy after a shock collar had been used ( by a dog trainer I will add) it ended up being destroyed - if you went anywhere near this dogs head or neck it would attack, it was terrified - not just a growl and a nip, I'm talking hospitalisation and sutures.

RE: at last!
That seems to make much more sense to me. I'm trying to think of a situation where an invisible fence would not be a better solution than a remote controlled zapper.
I think I'm inclined to agree, but I suppose the proof will be in the pudding ... whether there is now an increase in cases of dogs having to be put down because they're killing sheep (at a level which outweighs the improvement in welfare by making collars illegal).

RE: at last!

Mixed views.
