After 32 years in full time nursing, i am thinking of taking the leap into locuming! I was just wondering how locums cope with practices that use capnography?
I have NEVER used one and

RE: Locuming and capnography!

If you are on facebook, look up Lou The Vet Nurse, she had a link to some capnography stuff a day or so ago. There will always be different equipment in surgeries whether that be computers, blood or lab machines, ga circuits, theatre equipment - even simple things like how they change their oxygen cylinders!! Just ask - they won't expect you to know everything. Imo it's better to not be reliant on machines as not everyone has them - it's nursing skills you need which you no doubt have after nursing for that long.

Ps - I've just done my first week locumming after being in the same job for 10 years + and it is honestly fine!!

RE: Locuming and capnography!

Found it!!!

LOL, no i'm more than happy to use my eyes, ears and hands as i have found these 'tools' to be the safest i could ever have!

Was just wondering what nurses do when they haven't used anything like it before. Unfortunately due to financial constraints (hence thinking of locuming), i am unable to undertake any paid CPD at present :( I would love to in the future though.

RE: Locuming and capnography!

When I saw the post, I was presuming you were talking about how you would manage WITHOUT!

Having more monitoring equipment can't be a bad thing. Use it alongside the skills you already have (noone should RELY on equipment only), but do some specific CPD on capnography? See it as a positive!

I'm told Claire Roberts from Synergy CPD is very good on this.
