Who am I?
I’m a strong and confident Veterinary Nurse
I’m a problem solver, a colleague, a friend
Never to have a bulging fat purse, this my chosen vocation from birth
I’m a teacher, a student who’s proud,
a team

RE: Where Pets Come First?
Thank you

I know I generalise but the actual title of my words are "My 4 year Group mis-Venture"

I think the main point of difference is the fact you have a clinical director and they were established long before your corporate took over. Those practices, I'm in total agreement, they can remain true to the veterinary vocation.

The corporation i refer to sets up practices without ANY access to a veterinary surgeon for up to weeks at a time. When a vet is available it is locums of very varying degrees of skill and most of which should not be presenting themselves as sole charge ready.

My biggest points are that Clinical business should be left to Clinical professionals. Eg - Our practice manager was appointed by a non clinical business manager. Practice manager was a qualified hairdresser with a degree in dance. Far from suitably qualified - no previous reception, management, clinical of any transferable field. Unfortunately, the appointment of this practice manager in a practice with no permanent vet and no head nurse was a recipe for disaster!
I worked for the same group. We had no jvp for nearly 2 years and it ran on locums. There were 2 qualified nurses and together we pretty much kept the place running, even on the days when we had no vet at all - locum or otherwise. We were over run with receptionists but clinical staff were scarcer than rocking horse sh*t.

I agree that not all corporates are the same - there are some really good ones out there - not many I'll grant you but there are a few that are decent places to work

RE: Where Pets Come First?
My biggest points are that Clinical business should be left to Clinical professionals. Eg - Our practice manager was appointed by a non clinical business manager. Practice manager was a qualified hairdresser with a degree in dance. Far from suitably qualified - no previous reception, management, clinical of any transferable field. Unfortunately, the appointment of this practice manager in a practice with no permanent vet and no head nurse was a recipe for disaster!
I don't like seeing the independents disappear either. I am working for a corporate though, I've been here for 21 years and it's been corporate for 3 years. Thankfully our practice still feels like the same team. We don't see much pressure from above. Our Clinical Director has been here from being a new graduate 10 years ago and certainly doesn't put profit first. There are still some nice practices out there.

What a thought provoking poem and 'ode' to a vet nurse. I have been in the business for just over 3 decades now and have seen corporate's dismantle the caring independent vet surgeries, one by one. Unfortunately for me i do now work for a corporate, but HATE the lack of morals and ethics where patients and money are concerned - or should i say 'money' before the patients well being. Is a sad world we are living and working in now, but with committed RVN's out there, there is hopefully, still some hope that the care of patients should be put first!

I'm not saying ALL corporate's are bad. Its very dependant on where and who you work for as there can be a mixture of good and bad in ALL areas of veterinary business - Corporate and Independent. We all have a duty of care to provide the best we can, and so long as this continues to be. RVN's will continue to do the best they can, when they can :)

RE: Where Pets Come First?

nope you aren't alone - I really dislike corporates - and when all the independents have gone then that will be me gone too.
