prob will be a dell laptop - will go and look again tomorrow. Just about to get a stonking bill for repairs at the bungalow. everything on hold till I know how much

I would recommend an Acer Aspire as well, I have one. Go for a basic model and get someone to put extra memory in, cheapest option.

Otherwise go for an HP. Depending what you want to do with it, most entry level (basic) laptops are good enough.

I bought my Acer Aspire 5315 in September 20088 and I can tell you t hardly gets switched off!

I wouldn't necessary call Dell cheap! The one we got from the scratched website was around £400 but if we'd bought it from their original website it would have cost us nearly a grand . We've had 3 Dell computers over the last 12-15 years and all have been great. In fact my first Dell is being used by my daughter, even though it is older than she is!!

Dells are ok but they are cheap for a reason. They use cheap components and when I was looking to buy my laptop I was told to avoid them. I managed to get a hp for about £350 from dads.com and it's still going strong 4 years on. My bf works in computers and I got it before I knew him but he's said that hp are the way to go. They can be a bit more expensive but likely to last longer. It also helps if you know someone geeky to sort it out for you every now and again :P

Ebay has a Dell linked site where you can get PCs much cheaper, than their original site. Its basically computers which have built to certain specification & then not wanted or have a scratched casing.

We've had our last 3 computers this way & have always ended up with a better computer for the money we would've spent. You still get all the Dell back up as well & they come with their original warranty too.

I think I put in "scratched Dell" to find the site.
