Would definitely say theres an increase in these diseases in recent years. Most I've seen are UK dogs that have travelled in Europe, rather than rescues from Europe? Though I have seen one european rescue testing all their dogs for these diseases before sending them over.

A dog is a dog - what does it matter where it comes from? Also I would bet that the dogs waiting to be rescued in countries such as Romania are in far greater need and being kept in far worse conditions than thosein the rescue centres over here. Another point - the criteria for rescuing a dog over here has become almost absurd - unless you're a retired couple with a garden of several acres surrounded by an 8 foot high fence, most of them don't want to know.
I didn't start this thread for this reason - but as you mention it, with few exceptions, every foreign rescue dog we have seen - and we see a lot - have had problems and I am not singling out Romanian dogs either - Greece, Bulgaria, Spain, Romania and anywhere else you may choose to stick a pin in the map. In many cases these dogs are terrified just not handle-able , they are street dogs used to fighting to survive, not pets as people in this country understand them to be. And when they do bite the hand that feeds or don't settle with existing pets then they find themselves being passed on to the next unsuspecting owner or euthanased. It isn't fair on the dogs and it isn't fair on some of the new owners who really don't know what they are letting themselves in for in many cases.

Spend the money being spent shipping them over to improve the conditions where they are by neutering and improving the shelters instead of feeding the latest craze of ' My dog is a rescue dog from x country and that makes me so much better than everybody else'
A dog is a dog - what does it matter where it comes from?
It doesn't really - so long as you accept that somewhere along the line a dog or dogs are going to die because there is no room left
Another point - the criteria for rescuing a dog over here has become almost absurd - unless you're a retired couple with a garden of several acres surrounded by an 8 foot high fence, most of them don't want to know.
This point I will agree with you on - but then pet rescuing has become such big business over here along with doggy day care and all the other associated businesses that have sprung up.

But getting back to the original point of my post - all I really wanted to know was the approx number of cases of leish in this country and if there are areas with more cases than others. I really don't want to get into any arguments over who is right and who is wrong over this. I have friends who have foreign rescue dogs. We don't agree but I respect their opinion.

RE: Leishmania

James Colver Cert.
Only seen 1 case and it is a 'rescue' dog from Romania. My concern is that there is a possibility that bringing these dogs to the UK could impact on our own dogs as it has the potential to be zoonotic. We also already have so many healthy dogs in rescue centres that need forever homes here, so why go to all of the time and expense to bring sick dogs here? :(

I am of the same opinion - I get so het up about it that I don't even discuss it anymore, but putting that aside I just wondered if there were certain parts of the country where there are more leish positive cases as it seems to be on the increase

RE: Leishmania

Hi,
