My dog comes to the office with me, she's a 1 year old chihuahua cross. She doesn't normally have much in terms of attitude but recently she has become really toy possessive when other dogs come near. Today she was snarling

RE: Toy aggressive dog

Take away the toys?
Understood that canine behaviour is complex - I just wondered if I'd missed anything obvious, as I often do.

I'll take the advice on board and see what happens, if she continues like this I will take her to a behaviourist.

RE: Toy aggressive dog

Sterling advice Ben Ogden

RE: Toy aggressive dog

Canine behaviour is complex and sometimes a quick 'do this' can be insufficient, particularly when in cases where injury is the risk factor.

Questions that come to mind are:
what were the earliest signs you saw that the dog wasn't happy about resources being threatened? (if indeed they were noticed)
how were these instances handled?
Does the dog present with any other behaviour thats concerning?
How is the dog about other resources?
How is the dog about resources in other situations?
is it the same other dogs?
Are the other dogs fitting a certain category (male/female, Large/Small, Black dogs, exuberant/poor body language)
What is your dogs personality? (confident in novel situations, nervous, well socialised, personal space issues)
What is special about the Toys? (are the toys from home, surgery toys, would it be any object in her personal space?)

This is only a very small sample of things that need examining, to give you insight into why you need to take care with ad hoc advice on matters such as this.

RE: Toy aggressive dog

Hi RainyJ

Maybe you could ask Ingrid Haskal who is a qualified behaviourist. Her practice is called Pets with Problems and she has helped ith some of our patients.

She's neutered and had a full health check with my vet last week for her vaccs, so wouldn't be phantom pregnancy and shouldn't be anything like pain.

RE: Toy aggressive dog

entire or neutered? - ie is she having a phantom?
