We must wear our clothes there, get changed into uniform and changed again before leaving to prevent contamination

RE: Legislation on Veterinary Uniforms

I worked in the veterinary department of a zoo and its commonly done in that field to reduce the spread of zoonotic disease.

It would be interesting to know what effect this would have in general practice, whether it would help reduce spread of disease? Better safe than sorry in any case!

RE: Legislation on Veterinary Uniforms

Simply un-enforceable. What about mobile vets and nurses or those going out on house visits? What about the nurses that work in mixed and equine practices and do farm/yard calls? What about being on call and working out of hours but needing to get some food from the shop?

Then I'm not sure if the biggest risk is outside world to the practice/practice contamination to the outside world/advertising/branding etc. I really don't see a reason to have or enforce such a policy.

RE: Legislation on Veterinary Uniforms

I personally hadn't heard about this & under most circumstances I would agree on things being evidence-based. However in this situation, it doesn't seem like rocket science to accept that potential contact with grubby people & public transport etc is a breeding ground for bringing in unwanted bugs to vulnerable patients. Conversely I don't believe PPE can prevent every part of your uniform from coming into contact with potential nasties even if following barrier nursing protocols - unless you wear a category 4 hazmat suit all day - spatter happens, aerosol happens. It seems a very reasonable precaution to take to prevent spreading the likes of MRSA & other pathogens if it can be avoided. For me the issue is that my stingy boss will only supply 2 uniforms so if I am going to follow this 'law' then I want at least 6 minimum!

RE: Legislation on Veterinary Uniforms

my main issue here is that once again people seem to think rules should be brought in on no more than 'it seems a good idea' - I thought everything was evidence based these days? or did I get that wrong? I am worried that there is more time being spent on making up rules than there is being spent on actual nursing and I am also concerned that by bringing in too many rules you create people who then lose the critical ability to behave sensibly or offer their own assessment of a situation- we end up with people saying they can't do something because it doesn't fit in with what they were taught at college, when actually some of what they might have been taught at college was based purely on the tutors personal preference.

Guidance - yes - that is ok but hard rules which may not apply in all situations - no.

Please don't try and turn this job into 'nursing by numbers' where people will only do what is covered in 'the rules' because our patients don't read the rule books, sometimes you do need the ability to be able to think for yourself.

Are people not using PPE these days?

RE: Legislation on Veterinary Uniforms

After attending vet fest and a lecture on raw diets. The realisation that any animal fed raw diet should be barrier nurses due to the high chance of it carrying bacteria such as salmonella and E.coli 0157:H7. Which is also shed in their faeces.

Especially as the number of these patients is growing year by year!

I think not wearing uniform to/from work is a great idea!

Also i once wore my uniform home and had anal gland expression on it (I could still smell it but thought it was in my head). So to prevent that embarrassment again!

RE: Legislation on Veterinary Uniforms

sometimes I just wonder how we have managed to live so long? So are we now saying practices will need to provide laundry services for uniforms as well? - you know, separate laundry facilities that mean your uniform doesnt go through with shitty pet bedding or blood etc from theatre greens, because if you dont want anything brought in or out this is what we are looking at

RE: Legislation on Veterinary Uniforms

Rumours or not rumours but the uniform should not be wear everywhere :).

RE: Legislation on Veterinary Uniforms

People were discussing this at the last CPD that I went to but I cannot find any written legislation about it anywhere.

RE: Legislation on Veterinary Uniforms

It is a rule in dental practices under the legislation currently, changing at work so as to not bring anything in or out!

RE: Legislation on Veterinary Uniforms

I think that is a good idea!
