So I got thinking the other day about vets being clinical coaches to student veterinary nurses...and I started to wonder whether this is really appropriate.
Obviously I appreciate that vets have their own

RE: Vets as clinical coaches?

I did the old-style portfolio and had an RVN as my assessor for one year and a vet for the other. Both had very different perspectives and approaches towards nursing care, but one wasn't necessarily better than the other. As said above, some vets make good coaches, some don't, but the same can definitely be said of RVNs too! I think the most important thing is not whether the CC is a vet or a nurse, but that they have a genuine interest in the student's training and development and are willing to read up on any areas where their own knowledge may be lacking.

RE: Vets as clinical coaches?

My Wife's a vet and used to be a clinical coach for one student who now works for Fitzpatrick's oncology department. If vets don't know which anaesthetic circuit is appropriate or how to assemble it, or what a particular nursing model involves they are more than capable of finding that information out.

As for the question of time, even if a vet can't be a CC due to time constraints, it's still good for the student (and probably the vet) for them to get involved. It only takes seconds to read and sign a witness statement and provide a bit of verbal feedback for the task.

My one and only lecturer at college was (and still is) a vet (Julie at MYF) and has been conking out generations of outstanding nurses for many years.

So my opinion is yes vets can and do make good clinical coaches, are all vets good clinical coaches...no but then again not all nurses are good clinical coaches.....helps to have a combination and good in put from all members of the team

RE: Vets as clinical coaches?

Good chat on this post :)

Agree that a vet has important input, especially because in most practices you’re mainly working with the vet.

I know vets who are both good and bad clinical coaches and same for nurses. I suppose it’s just down to the individual?

Also, I guess in an ideal world the whole practice should be supporting someone’s training.

Only thing I will say about vet clinical coaches though is definitely the time constraints seem to be an issue, which impacts their ability to support the student. Although depending on the practice you could say the same for nurses!

RE: Vets as clinical coaches?
My wife is the clinical coach and I spend quite a bit of time supporting our SVN.

I'm not a pet vet and I know my circuit factors, what the anaesthetic monitors mean and how to bandage a leg.

I've learnt a heap of stuff from our SVN andI've helped her.

She will be an amazing nurse (just OSCE's to go).
and that is how it should be in my book - nurses and vets can learn from each other and that is what makes a well rounded team. I was vet taught when I first started - and alongside that which I learnt at college I feel it gave me a definite advantage.

RE: Vets as clinical coaches?

I've said it before apache

Hmm. Can any practice really spare a vet so have the time to be a good clinical coach? I know we couldn’t
as a full time thing not a chance but a student can have more than one clinical coach unless i'm mistaken. I still feel the vets have an important part to play though in the future of veterinary nursing

I think you have to have some vet involvement in training otherwise I think trainee nurses miss out and I think it does help to 'integrate' (if that is the right word?) vets and nurses as a team rather than seeing them as two entirely different jobs working in isolation. My feelings are if you are only taught by nurses you will only ever see the job from the nurses perspective - and sometimes it is useful to be able to take in a panoramic rather than blinkered view

For this reason I find the thought of this a little bit scary
Would the next generation of nurses be better if they were only trained by RVNs?
