mine is a sony a-200 which was £450, but then I got a new lens from my dad for £350 and bought a carry bag for £50. it is expensive BUT I wouldnt change it! Im lucky I have nice people around me coz prob couldnt afford it on nurses wages!!

That's what I was thinking but it's a bummer really as I wouldn't want to not take a camera to gigs or festivals - they probably being the places where I would definitely want to take lots of photos. And I certainly can't afford 2 cameras. Hmmmm. Tis tricky.

Maybe a canon g9 would be nice.... if only it wasn't sooooo expensive. ARGHHHH

You really don't want to take an SLR to gigs and festies. Pubs and clubs and day outings work well, but over nighters or long weekends are not advisable. for many reasons. weather, carrying it and it getting nicked. Be sure you get a good padded bag that is water resistant for those days that you might get caught out too. You may also want to look into local photography classes. Sometimes they have some at the local camera shops and they will also have cameras you can try out. It's such an expensive purchase some places will let you trial some of their items. :)

Thanks Steph. I'm currently looking at a Canon digital EOS 350D

But still none the wiser as to whether it'll be any good. So many reviews and so many things to consider.

I'm wondering too- if the camera is really big (compared to a normal digital camera) then if it's going to be a pain taking it anywhere? ie. gigs, festivals, pubs etc

I think what the frustrating bit is that if I had just waited til the camera was a couple of years old off the market it would have been so much cheaper!! lesson learned :D Hope that helps you in your quest. Also something to remember if you plan on buying more lenses, check the prices of the lenses for your camera because you can't really interchange brands. I think Canon has a lens converter but I think it's the only one that you can do that with. Lenses are really what you pay for. :) The screen in the back for a view finder is helpful after you take the picture, but it's not like with a normal digital camera where you can actually pick and choose the shot you want with this screen, your best shots and focus will be through the view finder with your naked eye. :) Be sure you get a shock resistant anti shake too especially if you don't plan on getting a tripod and using it all the time.

It's so tough buying something like this, especially when you have no idea what is good. I could spend hours reading reviews. Arghhhhh

I have an Olympus E-510 and I love it but it was very difficult to get the hang of and it was very expensive... i bought it for myself after my divorce. It was top of the line when I bought it so you could probably get it for half of what I paid now! lol ... just looked on google... yeah *cry* I paid £850 for mine... with two lenses with protectors, covers, flash case and cd. I also bought an extra battery.
