She is a member of the BVNA and I have suggested contacting them and also if there is an advocate at her college, but if anyone can advise of an impartial body/person that can listen and advise how she is able to proceed without it affecting her or her future career in the Nursing field otherwise I am afraid we may loose another nurse before she has a chance to really shine. Just an idea but is there a forum online such as this for RVNs where the conversation would be private - somewhere she can vent and just get out what she needs to and maybe get some support along the way?

Sorry if this is kind of hijacking this thread but may be useful for others too that are having a tough time of it.

RE: Bullying in practice and affects on health

Yes that what I talking about it's so sad to hear that other RVNs are in the same boat as me.
I have been bullied in practice which left me wanting to leave nursing after working my ass off to get into the profession but I also suffering with my mental health which left me on antidepressants and would dred going into work.

I have also witnessed bullying in the work place as well as being on the receiving end. I love banter as much as the next person but that ain't banter!!!

RE: Bullying in practice and affects on health
I do like having banter at work as it tend to nake and keep a happy environment.

What I talking about is people not talking, spreading rumours, being rude, making fault accusations.

Dee
I have had this so many times over the years. I have noticed it happens more when you get

a) a really competitive group where everybody is fighting to be just that bit better than everybody else (especially happens where wage is bonus driven).

b) you have a new comer in the team - and then you find it will be the old team v new comer or even more destructive you have a real smart new comer who will quickly establish who the 'big' names are in the practice and pick them off one by one. A new queen in the beehive if you like. Divide and conquer.

I got to the end of my tether once with one person I was working with and just asked them if it made them feel good making other people miserable? I don't think they had ever had anybody ask them that question.(I suppose even my question could be seen as bullying?) I wouldn't say things were plain sailing from there and it wasn't a fairytale happy ever after story but things did improve and we could at least talk to each other after that - it turned out they were struggling with depression. Quite a decent individual when you got to know them out of work, just murder to work with.

At another practice I was working myself and another nurse went to a CPD together. Now because what other people had told me about this nurse I already knew that she didn't like me and I was very wary, in fact while we were at work I used to try my damndest to stay out of her way.

It was a long journey to our CPD on the train and we got talking. We talked a lot more at the hotel and it turned out everything I had been told about her she had also been told (and worse) about me. Haven't spoken to her for ages now as we have both moved around but we got on really well after that. Just shows you how destructive gossip can be.

You could always suggest a survival weekend - which is what one of my bosses did as a team bonding thing. We split into 2 teams (there were 6 of us total) and we got dumped somewhere on the Yorkshire moors on a Friday night with compass, map, tent , basic supplies and instructions to be back at base camp on Sunday.

My view is that one of the best bit of practice is actually the interaction with the other members of staff. I really enjoy the 'banter' and leg pulling and happily take it and give some out. I do my very best not to take things too far, but I know it happens. I actually think that gentle leg pulling is the best way of dealing with a number of minor issues that can really help with mental health, staff management and help retention of staff within the practice. We will keep pulling the SNVs leg for ordering the expensive Vetwrap until they are all gone.....

I think the difficulty is where people take this light-hearted leg pulling as much more. I don't know the solution, but I'm 100% certain I don't want a boring, sterile working environment with no fun and banter.

RE: Bullying in practice and affects on health

to paraphrase the rousing sermon at Harry and Meghan's wedding...
