I'm interested in the whole lot. I know he was the only qualified vet for miles at the time apart from 3 or 4 horse doctors. I am rural, companion animals were not that common round here then but I know there are a few very old dogs graves and one for a cockerel up at the hall so there must have been some.

We also have a horse pit in the village and I now know the story behind that. Apparently any horse, donkey or mule not being used by the military or needed immediately for agriculture was destroyed so that it couldn't be used by the enemy in the event of invasion from France (Napoleon 1803 - 1805). So for a time afterwards ploughs round here were drawn by oxen.

I love history. What have you managed to find out so far? Are you just interested in his veterinary history or about his family background?

Would the RCVS have information on what veterinary work consisted of then? Are in you a rural area, was he treating just companion animals or farm too?
