I was really nervous despite having nursed for bloomin' years. However, my induction was 12 weeks then I was let loose on my own. They were always incredibly supportive and will always cover things again if you say you aren't sure. They want to keep you so will do their upmost to make sure you are comfortable. Deep breath and the world slows down. If you want any more advice, please feel free to PM me :)

RE: Anxious about new job

I echo everything everyone else has said - it's always scary starting somewhere new, especially if you're moving from a practice you've been working at for a long time, but you will not be expected to know where everything is and how everything's done from day one! Most large referral centres will have some sort of induction/training process for new staff. Ask questions, write things down, and don't be afraid to say if you're not sure how to do something. Being nervous before you start is normal and a positive thing as it shows you care, but give it a couple of months and you'll be looking back wondering what you were worrying about!

I love Will Smith's speech on skydiving - someone showed it to me before I did my skydive and it really helped me control my nerves, and now I think of it any time I'm doing something that gives me the fear!

Just give it time and don’t expect too much from yourself too soon!
Firstly you've got the job because you are the perfect person for it !!

I think being nervous is normal and it's a brave step to take ..you can do this..even though it's all a bit daunting ..it will all fall into place ..am sure the new team will help you settle in and will be aware of how you'll be feeling..thinknof it like this..all the staff there were where you are at now ..new job ..referral centre ..at some point ..take a deep breath ..and just go for it...sometimes the fear of doing something new is worse than the actual doing it..and after a few weeks you'll look back and be very glad you took that step..:-) good luck :-)

RE: Anxious about new job

aw bless ya, it's always daunting going into a new environment so feel easy in your mind we ALL get nervous and you're not alone in that! So of course everyone in your new team should cut you some slack as they realise you're a newbie!!

As a locum I encounter new environments all the time so here's my top tips for Day 1's...

1. Pocket note book

2. Identify where crash kit is (write it down... Helps to remember)

3. Oxygen supplies and how to turn it on/check it's on (write it down)

4. I tour Prep and check what's in cupboards/drawers. Write a brief list.

5. Ask for pre med and analgesia protocols. Copy sheet or write it down.

5. Locate toilet and tea room. Use!

6. Ask. Ask.Ask. Check back. Check back. Check back.

7. Breathe. (Am always amazed that I find myself holding my breath or shallow breathing when I'm nervous. A few deep and centering breaths calms me down).

hth

You'll be fine!!!!!

Have fun. Learn lots. You know heaps more than you think!!
