[/quote]

I think this happens a lot - and its not intentional - but nobody wants to step on anybody elses toes. So it becomes tough for the practice and equally tough for the pet owner.

Agree with Alison -have a chat and see if that will ease the way you feel a little

RE: Treatment of Pet

What an awful experience for you to have had to deal with. When one of my dogs collapsed at home having just been seen at my practice a couple of hours previously and been diagnosed with a suspected UTI and then rushed back in to find a ruptured splenic mass I was in no state to even know my own name let alone nurse him! I am shocked that you had to monitor and nurse him yourself - was this at your request or was it that you had no choice other than to do it? I know some nurses prefer to do things on their pets themselves but I'm not one of those people!

I would contact the practice manager and raise your concerns. I had an issue recently with the appalling state that my rabbit had been sent home to me in. She'd gone to a specialist exotic practice and was sent home with terrible urine scalds. I sent acomplaint letter but unfortunately got nowhere other than the offer of a free recheck appointment which was no use as she had unfortunately deteriorated and been put to sleep by the time they replied.

i think sometimes just because we are in the vet profession others may think we know a lot and don't want to risk patronising and so then don't go into detail about things for fear of insulting us but when emotions are high I think it's especially important to explain things clearly and to be honest I'd much rather feel a little bit patronisEd than not know whats going on.

fingers crossed you can get the answers you require.

Hope you're ok

RE: Treatment of Pet

Yes, you are right, you are the client and you should therefore be unafraid to ask the questions a client would normally ask! Clearly the whole matter is preying on your mind and heart so you need to talk about it with those who dealt with your beloved doggy. It may very well be that nothing more could have been done even if the anaemia had been further investigated at first sight - it is this answer you need to assuage your pain, isn't it? If you discover that a faster treatment plan may have made a difference, consider what will you do with this information...

In any event, you need to talk it through with the professionals responsible for the treatment of your furbaby. Talking helps.

Keep your heart strong and head clear.

You could write a polite letter or ask to see their clinical director / head vet explaining that you are disappointed and ask why the the anaemia was not investigated further as you would expect - and ask if they would be prepared to offer a good will discount if you don't feel that the treatment your dog received was up to scratch / if they cannot justify why the anaemia was not worked up.

RE: Treatment of Pet

What kind of animal? How old?

Sounds like a cocker spaniel with IMHA...............

I think they've perhaps over estimated your understanding of what was going on and you should have asked more questions. I wouldn't patronise a medically trained colleague explaining the ins and outs of anaemia. I also hate commenting on other people's care as I wasn't there and it's impossible without the animal to examine.
