Thank you for all your responses. My spinal surgery won't be for a good while as I'm recovering from something else at the moment. I could move into reception and bring other things to it quite easily especially when it comes to phone calls for advice and post op phone calls etc. I wouldn't just be sitting there answering a telephone. I am unable to do nurse clinics permanently as this means me stood up for 10 hours of my shift for 4 days. I can't change my hours to reduce the hours in the day. I can't stay in theatre as this wouldn't work with the way the place is run. If I could stay out the back then I would but I physically can't do it. This is why I've said about reception plus the extra bits I could do but they are saying no so I can't do anything else but to leave.

RE: Unable to do job anymore

Having a permanent nurse on reception is a huge asset to a practice. Also there are a huge number of admin things you could do, what about nurse clinics? It's up to your practice to support what you feel comfortable doing. I don't think they can get away with paying you a receptionist wage when you are a qualified nurse.

RE: Unable to do job anymore
Thank Emma Aurelia. You're very sweet! I'm not a member of the BVNA unfortunately. We already have a couple of staff who are practice managers.

Apache...thanks for responding. I have a spinal problem which is getting worse. I've had several procedures on it already and now need surgery. I wont ever recover from it. It is worsening and deteriorating and I can't even pick up a cat in a carrier anymore due to the weight. Mentally I'm not going into that but this is something that I am under treatment for and getting help with that but that side of things in the job is a massive struggle also. I'm struggling to do any part of vn job at the moment. Pay cut works out as over £4000 per year which is a lot when there's only my wage at home. They want me to be a nurse which means not just ordering and dispensing and insurance forms. They aren't being flexible so I feel completely stuck. Finding a new job doing something else isn't easy either due to my hours and holidays commitments I need.
This is an emotive problem and it can be hard to look at things clearly. Sounds a little like the 'higher ups' like things in boxes - Your doing reception, therego your a receptionist, therego you go on the receptionist rate of pay. Is there scope to approach this from a 'yes, i'm moving into reception, but i'm moving into reception from a nurse perspective with nursing skills and can bring X, Y, Z to reception'.

Never underestimate the influence reception has on a client, they are the first and last face a clients deals with and can impact a clients perspective of a practice hugely.

RE: Unable to do job anymore

Thanks for explaining things in more detail ..I too have a spinal issue and use a wheelchair full time but am not confined to it I just can't stand or walk. However there are ways to do things differently and safely ..Access to work have helped me allot in my previous practices with equipment and adaptation which the practice initially pay fir but get money back within 4 wks . I am not comparing myself physically to you but I am saying there is support and help which could be a starting point...but I understand the other issues yiu are dealing with are hard too. Will you have any Physioco rehab post op ? An occupational therapist could be useful at this stage to come into your work and access to work could be used as well. if there are any aspects of VN work yiu could continue with the right support and equipment / adaptations ( this could be small things or bIG her like a ceiling hoist , lift, ramp , special chair or wheelchair ..they can also provide taxis to and from work if yiu cannot use public transport or drive ..this list is endless really but would be personal to you. Please pm me if y need any more input on this side of things ..this help I mention could be a lifeline which yiu could really do with right now. Access to work is ongoing as long as yiu are working. Jobcentre plus can prob give yiu more details etc

ok re BVNA and existing PMs ..

What is the nature of your illness? Will you recover? Are there any aspects of the VN job you can do? What sort of pay cut are we talking?

My initial feeling is there are likely to be many aspects of the job you can still do, if you can still work reception. Can you take on all the insurance forms/telephone advice/clinical coaching/ordering/dispensing etc? What about monitoring anaesthetics if you can sit down etc. Tell us what you can and can't physically do. There will be a workable solution, I'm sure.

RE: Unable to do job anymore

So sorry to hear your news. Feeling like you are struggling with little or no support must be very hard indeed esp right now, if yiu are a member of the BVNA yiu could speak with them on their helpline esp as emplyment rights are poss at play now. If you want to stay in practice , all be it a different role then some adjustments should be made For you,. Have you thought about practice manager type role maybe combined with reception duties too? This could improve your salary aspect ? Just an idea ?! I really hope yiu don't have to leave as you sound a lovely person and an asset to the practice ! I hope they will do all they can to assist you but it sounds like you will have to prod the powers that be and come up with ideas and suggestions to get the ball rolling and hopefully yiu will end up in a situation there that you are happy with . Good luck :-)
