Need your thoughts.
Don't know if you listened to the locum lecture the other week given by JHP agencies, very informative. They advised locum nurses having VDS and public liability insurance.
I am a locum RVN, I've got VDS cover but they

RE: Locum - insurance

Definitely zero politics (aaaaaahhhh bliss) - and even if there is the odd bit of gossip and am encouraged to join in with it - I don't. AVOID!

Back onto the subject - there's a thread I joined in with a while ago, but is still relevant to your circumstances. Have a read through and am sure it'll answer your query.

https://www.vetnurse.co.uk/veterinary-nurse-forum/f/5/p/28179/158873.aspx#158873

edited...

This is the specifically relevant part...

The whole point about negligence is that you are covered by the practice policy. You are working in a team that takes joint responsibility for its actions. In the final analysis a nurse or employed vet is always under the overall control of a senior veterinary surgeon. If the practice is negligent it is the practice that is sued, not the individual nurse/vet/receptionist/kennel maid/dog groomer. VDS is a mutual insurer owned by the veterinary profession providing PI cover for veterinary practices for normal veterinary work and C&D cover for individual vets and nurses either named on a practice policy or carrying their own policy. You are in exactly the same situation as a locum vet.

Public liability insurance is a completely different type of insurance. Public and employee liability insurance are a legal requirement for any business and it is the business that is insured not the individuals working in it.

If a practice was to try and sue you for negligence they would be suing themselves. It is the practice that bills the owner and it is the practice that must have the negligence cover and the PL/EL cover.

What you need is C&D cover.

Im covered in my own right by my own policy for indemnity insurance but every one says I need public liability cover, this is the one I'm struggling with. This is the one I thought we would be covered with via the practice.

All the links people keep giving me keep saying we don't cover self employed locum nurses, we cover dog walkers her groomers etc.......

Im bamboozled............

Hope you are enjoying locuming as much as me, no politics!

RE: Locum - insurance

hiya, yes you are normally covered by the practice BUT they have to have named you. A quick phone call is all it takes, so I understand...

i always check the practice is willing to cover me / has the space on their policy to do so. Some practices use other insurers so it's always best to ask if you will be covered...

I get contract signed between me and the practice before starting work and part of that details that they need to provide professional indemnity insurance. If they can't - won't - I don't work there.
