I don’t know anything about umbrellas etc, what is the reason for using them?

[/quote]

for the employers - a locum who uses an umbrella company means they don't have to worry about tax and national insurance, they know it has been dealt with and it won't come back and bite them on the bum at a later date

for the locum - they work out the tax , national insurance , 'holiday' pay etc and the locum gets their wage minus deductions which of course also includes a deduction for the fee the umbrella charges for doing this service. Use an umbrella and dependent on their cut you can end up a lot less wealthy than you thought.

RE: Giant umbrella company rip off!

I don’t know anything about umbrellas etc, what is the reason for using them?

RE: Giant umbrella company rip off!

another tip.

“Our simple pricing structure is a breeze! No charges when you don’t work and just £9 or £14 per week when you do! At Purlieus Consulting we certainly won’t penalise you each time you take a break”.

We can offer our reduced net margin which would be 4.5% of the
assignment income received capped at £22

So, haggle, is my tip. Perhaps you can haggle with them even though you're signed up , if you threaten to leave and state the rate is hugely punitive and are considering going elsewhere...

As in many things in life, it is caveat emptor (buyer beware) - so I say to everyone considering an umbrella company...PUSH FOR INFORMATION AND KEEP PUSHING until you understand what you're getting into.

funny how they told you what they charge but not me! I spoke to a guy called Harry who sounded like he didn't know what he was doing and he never once told me the exact amount they deduct. I feel like an idiot for having trusted my agency that they were recommending a good umbrella company!

How can they justify charging me over £40 in fees when that reedgo company you listed charge £10????????

The whole use of umbrella companies is a joke!

RE: Giant umbrella company rip off!

Hello, info for you all to consider...

I contacted Giant and asked them how much they'd charge me as an RVN. £28 per week, flat rate unless I am going through a recruitment agency and then they have different margins (so I suspect you end up paying more than this £28 per week once the recruitment agency margin has been taken into account...).

You don't have to be working through an agency to register with Giant but the practice you wish to locum for must be on Giant's systems for this work...

Remember that you cannot claim for travel & subsistence or meal allowance as RVN's fall outside of Supervision, Direction and Control under HMRC regulations (has been this way since 2016).

I suggest looking around and competing your umbrella company. I've detailed before some that have been recommended as 'good' (by other locums) (Vanilla - is no longer trading)

Redego

http://www.redego.co.uk/

See attachments re Giant FYI...
