A nurse I worked with passed on his 4th try. Some of these he passed at 90% and above. You can do it!! Don't give up. There are lots of other ways to stay calm. Have a look at Human Givens they have loads of ways to stay calm. You start practicing them when your not stressed and then they work when you are stressed.

RE: Giving up

When taking my osces I went to my doctors and asked for something for nerves as I had suffered really badly during my driving test for that reason, he prescribed me propanalol and they helped so much!
Yeah i have multiple trained clinical coaches helping me at work i honestly owe my life to them for their efforts. I have taken Kalms for past exams yet i dont see much difference. My problem is once one station goes wrong i just get myself in a state.

RE: Giving up

Exams, particularly OSCEs, are absolutely nervewrecking so I can see where you are coming from. It doesn't mean that you are not a fantastic nurse!! Believe in yourself, because you CAN do it!! Assuming you have finished your NPL - your clinical coach must believe you are totally competent at Day 1 skills so don't feel like it is not meant to be.

Have you tried taking Kalms? I have to take them before any exam otherwise I stress myself out too much!

RE: Giving up
Has anyone been in the situation of sitting Osces for the 3rd time yet still feeling like you have failed. It couldnt have gone worse in my eyes. Something tells me im just not meant to be an RVN. I have revised 5 days a week for 6 month and i felt confident until i stepped in the room.
Don't give up!

Years ago, I trained as a commercial pilot. I felt very much like you do as I was on my third attempt to pass a flying exam - which involved flying an aircraft in to land +/- 100ft and +/- 5 degrees on a flight path. And each time I failed to get it right, I had to rent an aircraft to take the test again, at a cost of £1000 per hour that I didn't have! The pressure was unbelievable.

Point is, I got there in the end, and I wasn't any worse a pilot because I didn't get it first time.

In fact, I sort of think that people who take more than one attempt at an exam might go on to be better for it. After all, the skills or knowledge have become more ingrained as a result of the resits!

GOOD LUCK :)

RE: Giving up

Thanks i had all the bachs remedy up until and on the day of osces Plus i practiced 5 nights a week with different people setting up tasks its just on the day of the exam i work myself up so much i just lose control.

RE: Giving up

Have you tried setting up the practice for mock osce's and have your clinical coach get someone in you don't know to observe you doing them? Under timed conditions?

Spray some pet remedy/take bachs flower remedy before you attend (don't laugh, did this to a student of mine, sprayed the keyboard before she was going to leave for an exam as she was flustered and flapping - didn't tell her - it seemed to work! I also always took bach pastels prior to exams to help me)

I know plenty of nurses that didn't pass first time.
