Can I ask if everyone does regular surgery screen testing ie. swabbing of clinical areas? We do ours annually & last year were pretty good, with minimal changes needed to get a clear screen. However, this year we have some major issues

RE: Environmental testing

Hi Cat,

We use Greendale lab for their Surgery Screen - it is a set number of swabs with a suggested list of areas to sample. They divide it into quantitative & qualitative sampling to give you a clear picture of what bacteria & the numbers found. It's easy to do (takes my VNA about 30 mins to sample around 18 swabs) & we time sampling when the clinic is (theoretically!) at it's cleanest so first thing in the morning.

When we get the results back, if there are issues we address them (ie. review protocols, check with staff 're training needs/ info on dilution rates) then re-swab the problem areas 2 weeks later. And we keep doing that until we get clear results!! It's an annual thing for us, is not cheap but does really help to get staff on board with good cleaning regimes. We also based our cleaning protocols on a human hospital study, and adopted their recommendations 2 years ago.......which is why I was so puzzled at our results this year!!

Anyway, I hope that helps!

Can you explain how your clinic carries out the environmental testing, I would love to do some in our clinic!

Thanks
