Thank you, Victoria. I will see what happens if they want to take my application further. I think I would need to look at it as a chance to learn lots of new skills, rather a well paid job. I know I was very generously paid by my previous employer so I wasn’t expecting to be able to match that.

Would definitely negotiate!

Referrals tend to pay more I thought anyway, I went into referral as a newly qualified and was on the bottom of the pay scale at £23K, much more than I would have been on in first opinion!

I like Alison's suggestion to negotiate pay reviews with the idea of it going up that way you show willingness to work hard to prove your self and you are not to pushy about it. Unfortunately salary is always a hard negoation as the employee does not want to be to pushy but, the employer wants the best money for value. With 23 years experience and all your post numerals they can see straight away you will be worth your weight. Just don't let them take advantage. :) good luck.

Loobyfly you are already a good nurse and they clearly know this as they've snapped you up! I understand that you are reticent to be too pushy so perhaps this suggestion might be useful...

1. Negotiate a better base salary (you deserve it for your experience and qualifications)

2. Negotiate a quarterly reviews over the next year with commensurate salary increase if you have met or surpassed expectations.

Thus, after 12 months you could be back on the salary you're on now.

I went to referral from first opinion and was on relatively good wage for the area and time. and soon proved my worth by enrolling on Dip AVN and gained a good salary package. unfortunately, is need discussion. if they want you they will hopefully agree within reason

Thank you Nick and Alison. I will have a think about it. I don‘t want to be too pushy about salary before first proving myself to be a good nurse. It’s a tricky one!

I would say that you should be able to negotiate a good deal as I see you have various post nominals including your NCert in Anaesthesia and nearing completion of your Dip AVN. Good luck.

I haven’t gone into the fine details of salary yet, but it’s certainly something I would be asking. I think the problem is that in my current practice I am quite senior and have various responsibilities whereas I don’t have any experience of referral nursing so would be starting again at the bottom.

Sounds odd to me? Have you discussed how your pay would or could increase there?
