I am in the process of registering with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society to become a hedgehog carer,

I am gathering things together that I may need to look after the poorly critters.

Can any one think of any think of any

Re: Hedgehogs....

Well done you! I dod hog rescue / rehab for 3 years. In 2007 I had 13 of the little piggies over wintering with me. Its very rewarding and great to do...but very stinky!!

My top tip is rat / chinchilla wheels. I used these in my hog cages so they could get some good exercise as they naturally roam up to 3 miles per night. Almost all of them used the wheels happily and it kept them busy and active.

For food bowl...I used shallow, hard plastic 'ash trays' from wilkinsons cheapo shop. These were fine for the food but you need the nice heavy 'mason cash' type ceramic bowls for the water (tescos are currently selling these for £1 each).

Keep some canaural on hand as they often have ear mites. It can also be used directly onto their skin too.

Lastly - get some good release sites in mind. Your local rescue or the BHPS should be able to tell you where some good ones are. It needs to be free of badgers!

Good luck!

Re: Hedgehogs....

I think what you are doing is great Emma

I have tried on a few occassions to nurse sick hedgehogs back to health but they were so ill to start that they didnt make it. The one that I was successful with, the family that brought it in were going to keep it in their 'hedgehog friendly' garden!

Re: Hedgehogs....
Aww, cute! I didn't know such people existed until I watched bizzare animal ER on BBC3 the other day!

I've had quite a few litters of hoglets & raised one (a single one) "Sonic" from a tiny screeching pink thing to a 700g hog for release, am happy to help if you have any baby queries
Thanks will bear that in mind. Just waiting for my pack to arrive, have things kinda set up but just need a hedgehog. Not in any rush as means they are healthy.

Gave him to a vet that worked with me at the time, she lived in a converted barn out in the middle of nowhere. Her garden was surrounded by rolling fields, so was a nice place for him to go live

Re: Hedgehogs....
you are really lucky to have done that Rachel, I would love to have a hedgehog happy garden but I fear my dogs would not allow it!

Re: Hedgehogs....

Aww, cute! I pulled off 25 ticks they were huge! there was still probably 55 more on the Hedgehog. I took it ti Wildlile Aid as I couldnt give it the best care, I gave it to Sarah who works there, she is often seen on the tv on the wildlife Aid programme. She said they were going to give the Hedgehog a GA to remove the remaining Ticks. She felt it was anaemic and weak with all the ticks it had on it.

I must phone up and see how its doing?

It was so tempting to keep the Hedgehog, but as I said before I couldnt give it the best care and they belong in the Wild. Do not think this Hedgehog will be able to be realised as it doesnt curl up in a ball?? which I thought was very strange.....

They r so lovely xx

Re: Hedgehogs....

Well always wanted to do so took the plunge and now doing it, just need a hedgehog now!

Re: Hedgehogs....

Oh wow - I want to do that! Good luck, sounds very rewarding x

Re: Hedgehogs....

Got all that ready and in my car!

Re: Hedgehogs....

Snuggle safe, shallow ceramic food dish, old towels, gardening gloves, ivermectin spot on, that should get you on your way!
