I considering locuming in 2018 and was wondering if any of you can recommend an agency to work through?
I’ve done some locum work in the past and processed my taxes myself, however, I ended up having to pay twice as

RE: Recommend a locum agency?

Thanks for your replies guys, really appreciate it.

I think I might have a look into doing my taxes myself again as from a similar post, it looks like some companies take a large chunk of your wages! I have a couple of friends that are self employed (dog walkers etc.) who might be able to help me out this time round :)

Many dropped their charges to account for the drop in your income due to the lack of T&S expenses... but many haven't unless you point it out (why should they stop charging you if you don't flag it up? Hmmmmm - caveat emptor!) So, check with your current Umbrella company to see if they will reduce their fees, or if not, try elsewhere... look around and compete your current Umbrella company and you might find you're earning more because you're being charged less.

RE: Recommend a locum agency?

Hi there

I have just written the previous post asking about umbrella companies

I two am folking out a lot each week in tax etc

I tend to work nights as get a better rate but because of that can get a better work like balance and only do one or two weeks a month but end up paying 800 in that week in tax leaving not much for month to last but if I do it as a week on week off basis I would be no better off as a perm nurse so don't get why they tell you locum work makes you better off as any extra you earn goes to tax man or what ever the umbrella company does with the money.

If I earn £600 in a week I still come out with around £360 so earn the same as a perm nurse Really!

RE: Recommend a locum agency?

Do you mean an umbrella company, not a recruitment agency? You'll still need to do your tax returns as a Ltd Company (best done by a qualified accountant, tbh) - a recruitment agency won't do it for you. Unless you are on their books as an employee (PAYE). Umbrella companies effectively employ you so taxes etc are of course done by them for you.

There are no recruitment agencies (worth their salt) who would now take on a self employed sole trading locum. Due to potential exposure to fines from HMRC if a locum didn't pay tax that was due, they would have to foot the bill. They will only take on Ltd Company status locums.

As for your previous tax return... If you think it is financially worthwhile, get it looked at by an accountant. You can go backwards to adjust previous returns so it is possible you could obtain a refund if you have over paid. Take professional advice, is my recommendation.

If you really do mean a recruitment agency then, my personal vote is for Vet Seekers

RE: Recommend a locum agency?

I have always found Recruit4Vets great, and if you don't want to do your own paperwork and taxes, they help set you up with Danbro accounting. Was so easy starting out.
