Where I live, I fear that is the normal way to euthanase a dog. Some councils I am aware of dont have a contract with any vet for euthanasia of stray dogs, so I guess it can be left to the imagination, anyone else have any experience of this?? Do you know exactly how the dogs are pts?

Re: Worst day ever!!

We had a beautiful little patterdale cross brought in the other day, not chipped, so we phoned the dog warden to collect it. She called shortly after & collected it.

About quarter of an hour after she'd been a van comes racing into the carpark & a man comes in asking if his dog's with us, he describes it as being his so we told him that unfortunately he was too late & it'd gone with the dog warden up to the council kennels.

He was really p-d off & growled "well how much is that gonna be then" I said I wasn't sure but it was usually about £30, to which he replied "F**k it they can shoot the little b*****d I'm not paying that" and stormed out.....

Me & the other nurse on reception were just stood there open mouthed....

HIs girlfriend rang a short while after saying she did want the dog back & demanding that we give her the number for the dog warden. We refused to give her the direct number (as it's not for public anyway) & asked for her name & number for us to give to the dog warden "you can have my number" she said & refused to give us her name.

We gave her details to the dog warden who said she didn't particularly want to give the dog back to them.....and we haven't heard anything since.

As for owners having no money for treatment, we had a lady ask us to put down her 10 month old kitten with a blocked bladder cos she couldn't afford any treatment, an old man who'd taken on a young collie & wanted it put down cos it was too bouncy & chased the neighbour's sheep....

we have loads of awful days!!

Re: Worst day ever!!

Looks like the credit crunch is getting to some of our "not so responsible" clients. Had a lovely lab pup brought in on Monday. It was found running around outside the surgery, We kept it for 24hrs. I rang around the local clients to see if anyone had seen a new pup being walked and knew the owner. No luck, no microchip and no one came looking for this pup. I was begining to get very attached to this little girl!

Arranged for pup to go to Battersea next day. Spoke to dog warden who told me she had had so many calls from people who had found dumped dogs. Only that morning she had been to collect a mastiff that was dumped in a childrens playground, they owner told mums in the playground that he couldnt afford it anymore and he was just going to leave it there!

Spoke to battersea today. Pup has not been collected and she is beating up the rest of the puppies in the cage! Maybe thats way she was chucked out???

Re: Worst day ever!!

Sorry to hear about your day,but it is good to have somewhere to rant.

'thought people did christmas clear out not summer!!' I do not know about pts but people do chuck out in the summer to save boarding fees! I remember one of my customers told me that their neighbour let their dog roam the street for 2 weeks while they went on hoilday. If it had been picked up by the dog warden etc they tried to claim it from the rescue saying that it had escaped or got a new dog from rescue. ! As it was cheaper than the boarding costs for the fortnight and cost of vaccinations every year.
