ive not been happy for a long time. A year ago I cut my hours in half so now only work one week of nights then have 3 weeks off. Initially it was on the understanding that I would replace my other week of nights with day shifts but that has never

RE: At a loss as to what to do

Soooo many practices literally screaming out for locums, why not fill the week of days with locum shifts somewhere, you could really then see whether or not you would like it long term?

They are not giving your the shifts your promised so they cant exactly complain if you fill them somewhere else! ;)

RE: At a loss as to what to do
Most places seem to be screaming out for good nurses, why not book at referral places, that way you avoid routine stuff and get more nursing options and see cases through.
excellent idea! I've never even thought about doing that for some reason!

RE: At a loss as to what to do

My contract states Im entitled to a break as my shifts are over 6hrs but I'm lucky if I get 5 mins to myself to shove some food down my throat and have a pee! The reason I don't actually take my allowance is most nights it's too busy and I would never forgive myself if an animal crashed whilst I was sat on my ass stuffing my face.

Im going to contact some locum agencies tomorrow and see if theres anywhere looking for someone to work a couple of shifts a week during my weeks off. See what some other practices are like.

With regards to the referral centre - there's not many near me but there is one that's advertising for a team leader which is just about in driving distance and many of my friends have said they think I'd be s great head nurse. I just don't know if I could face the drive everyday as it'll take around 90mins in rush hour Id guess.

Just don't want to make the wrong decision and end up being even more unhappy

RE: At a loss as to what to do

Most places seem to be screaming out for good nurses, why not book at referral places, that way you avoid routine stuff and get more nursing options and see cases through.

RE: At a loss as to what to do

just wondered if a couple of day or 1/2 day shifts would fit in with the weeks you are off?

RE: At a loss as to what to do

Hi,

Are you working longer than 6 hours straight? You are legally entitled to a rest-break of a minimum of 20 minutes.

https://www.gov.uk/rest-breaks-work

What does your contract state about rest-breaks / meal breaks? I should think your boss would cover you for wee and poop breaks if nothing else. What do you currently do (is there a big bucket somewhere???!)

thanks you 2, was hoping you'd both give me your pearls of wisdom!

Woth regards to the issue of breaks I'm sole charge so not possible to leave someone else in charge whilst I grab something to eat etc.

Ive done pros and cons lists in the past and my current role seems to win despite all the negatives. If I find a new job how do I even know I'll be happier - the grass isn't always greener.

i really like the suggestion of doing some volunteer work, what a great way to feel useful. I'm actually going to a rescue centre on Monday to meet a bunny I'm hoping to adopt as a new companion for our bunny so I might enquire about doing some volunteering there for them.

Im feeling way more positive already! I like action plans and things to focus on.

Massive thanks!

RE: At a loss as to what to do

I know I always say it - but its a method that does break the problem down into more palatable chunks

       Days Nights

positives negatives positives negatives

make your lists and find out from there which really is the best for you, or from what you find from your list is there an acceptable middle ground - and yes it might mean moving practice

RE: At a loss as to what to do

hi there,

my thoughts are:

1. Health important, first and foremost. So listen to family, they have ur best interests as heart!

2. Health important. Said it again to highlight importance... Take breaks, eat, rest. If u decide off own bat not to take breaks or eat, why? If too busy and need cover, speak to boss and be honest about the need. If own workaholic worry warting - STOP IT!

3. Look for other roles but maybe different to current one. For example, charity work or shelter work or rescue work to fill those weeks not in a paid role.

4. Permanent position move. Worth the shot if u cannot sort out your current issues. Make sure you ask the right questions at interview to ensure as much as u can u get the right role, environment and support u need

gotta run now... Will post again if am inspired with other suggestions for u!

Happy Christmas, hunny.

xxx
