I'm a RVN but i now work for agria pet insurance, it's standard for pre auths that the initial request has to come from the owner. We will then contact and speak to the vet

Possibly but once you get Pawtal set up its very straightforward to use and so quick. If they can do it why does it take some of the others '5-7 working days' if you're lucky!

That's interesting because Animal Friends gave me very specific terms for being able to submit a pre-auth. Could it be because I do it the old fashioned way instead of the pawtal.

We've used Animal Friends Pawtal a few times now for pre-autos/direct claims, very impressed. If you give them all the right info you get a decision within an hour.

We dont deal direct with E&L so have never tried to do a pre auth.

Have not had any problems with Agria though?

we love pet insurance (under written by E&L) will not do a pre-auth

Agria insurance seem to make it very hard to get a pre-auth

I don't mind the paperwork, but I do mind the acrobatics you have to perform to get a simple answer

Absolutely no direct claims without a pre-auth, including petplan. For any company other than petplan, we will only do continuing claims direct, and only in very exceptional circumstances. We're a tiny practice and we really can't absorb huge bills the way a referral or corporate could, so we're pretty damn firm on this.

We generally only do pre-auths if the owner is unsure of cover level.

We do direct claims with most companies but we have the owner sign a disclaimer stating they're aware they are liable to pay that anything not paid by the insurer. That way if the insurers don't pay out, we have a signed documents saying the owner knows they need to pay us (in case they argue with us about it).

Most companies I've dealt with offer pre-auths but some of them seem to make it extremely difficult and, like you say, some of them need the request to come from the owner and not us.

I used ot be in charge of insurance for my practice and we used to;

1. Direct claims for petplan life time cover.

2. No direct claims for certain insurers we learnt were notoriously difficult to get pay outs from.

3. Direct claims for ongoing treatments. So I imagine because you are a referral some clients have already been sumbitting claims for the problem they have been referred to you for, so assuming their claim limit is enough, you could submit direct claims for them because the insurer is already paying out for that problem?

I equal parts hate and love insurance forms, and I agree some companies are dead easy to talk to, other are a damned nightmare trying to get just a simple yes or no from.

I‘ve never heard of this?!
