A high-morale environment is one built on trust, respect, autonomy and recognition.
Something I feel is lacking in my job as a veterinary

RE: Thinking of leaving the profession!

There are seriously better jobs out there! Or as Alison says. Go locum. :) go Ltd. Locun. Earn a lot more.

Find somewhere that puts your mind and skills to good use. Don't let the bad jobs put you off because I promise, There are good jobs!

Those employers should be embarrased. Charities pay better than that all over the UK........ charities. More than private practice. Let that sink in.

RE: Thinking of leaving the profession!

hi,

have you considered locuming? Certainly the pay is far superior.

I do have lots of interests outside of work and regulary engage in these activitys but its the low morale at work. I do have interest in work mainly surgery, radiography and ECC but my practice does not invest in its nurses so I would never get to utilise the extra knowledge. I am just a cleaner with an RVN badge. I have had three jobs in 10 years and unfortunately all been the same.

Yeah that is right £16,000 and all jobs I have had offered me that much and wouldn't pay higher for a nurse and don't get a cpd budget and you can imagine on that salary that no way I could pay to better myself and do a certificate.

I would love to go somewhere and volunteer to but I am one of the older generation of nurses with a family trying to make ends meet!

RE: Thinking of leaving the profession!

Try going somewhere exotic and volunteering for a few weeks or moonths. If you pick the right place you can use your nursing skills to the max plus you get to save some lives which is a good reminder of why we do this job. Plus you get a holiday

RE: Thinking of leaving the profession!

I'm sorry. Is that a typo?

£16,000????

I wouldn't accept that as a day 1 qualified. That's disgusting. Even if you live in the sticks..... That's a pathetic salary for an RVN. One who has been nursing 10 years deserves far far more!

I'd leave. Tell your employer that their pay is insulting. Tell them that they haven't supported or valued you at all (your rapport and familiarity with clients and patients is clearly massively undervalued).

Don't give up. Just move and find somewhere better for you in every way.

I was discussing today (abour 2 hours ago even) with another RVN about a few practices that one of us has worked for, where we nearly quit nursing because of the practice.

It's so easy to feel trapped. That all practices will be the same. That the grass isn't greener..........however it couldnt be more of the opposite!

Even this year. The last two practices I have locumed for have restored my faith in private practice. Earlier in the year I felt dejected and useless. It's about finding the practice right for you.

The last two practices ive locumed at have wanted me permanently and sad ive left! I've been sad to leave too!

Just take the jump to another practice. Or locum. Locuming has made me realise (with the help of all the praise from others) that im a cracking nurse. Even when I have an off day now, I just shrug it off because my confidence in my abilities is strong. 6 months ago I had lost all confidence.........

You will probably realise that you're a better nurse than those who have made you feel low.......

RE: Thinking of leaving the profession!

Hello,

have you stayed in the same practice for the last few years or moved around i.e. your career history?

Also, do you have any interests within, or outside, nursing you would like to explore further (be as fanciful as you like; the idea road can lead to inspiration and set you off on a journey you never thought possible before).

With more info we can better help you direct your focus/offer suggestions that are appropriate for you to consider...

Might sound daft but it kind of put the nursing into perspective - instead of nursing being my whole life it just became a part of my life. (a large part I'll grant you) I think its healthy to put some of your energy into something else and have fingers in a few pies.

I have maybe got 10 yrs tops left in me in this job (always assuming my body hasn't packed up on me before that) and after that .... well if the pension wont keep me its back into theraping
