With regards to City and Guilds 313 unit on legal/professional stuff (and the exam), I had a book on recommended reading called "Ethics, Law and the Veterinary Nurse", but it is rather out of date. There is a little in "Aspinall's Complete Textbook

RE: Legal / Professional training and Charter

Thanks Kirsty, that's very helpful.

That's roughly the gist of what I thought, but wanted to be sure I wasn't missing anything else major that had changed.

It appears to be a minefield and I can only say I'm glad it's not me having to sit the exam!

RE: Legal / Professional training and Charter

Hi Dave

There are some of these questions answered under the FAQ section of the Royal Charter section on the RCVS website.

As far as I am aware the Royal Charter formally recognises veterinary nurses as a profession in their own right for the first time.

It got rid of the unregulated list of veterinary nurses and merges it as one register of veterinary nurses. It stipulates the nurses most abide by a code of conduct and complete 45 hours of cpd over a three year period. It also states now that nurses are now accountable for their actions and under the same disciplinary rules as vets.

RVNs are the only ones that can carry out reserved schedule three under the veterinary surgeon act

Unfortunately as all of these changes has come in the law and legalities have not moved with the times and rather out dated now.

When schedule three was written it was written with lay staff in mind and not RVNs so much of it is outdated and doesn't fit with the current level of training and professional responsibility of the modern RVN

I hope that answers some of your questions

Kirsty
