I am just looking for some advice!

I have been qualified three years and mostly worked in small animal practice, some hospitals as a locum and some OOH work. However I have always wanted to work in a referral practice and progress my career and work to the highest standards and be the best I can be, However I just dont feel confident enough now to make the move, unfortunately I have been in practice where I have not been allowed to utilise my skills, even place IV cannullas, and the majority of my skills and knowledge I have not utilised since a student. I have also been bullied in practice so I just dont feel like I am good enough or my skills and knowledge would be up to scratch as a referral RVN. I have never felt supported in general practice and worry it will be same with referral work.

I have seen positions come up for surgical, ward and critical care nurses in a referral hospital close to me but dont even feel confident to apply, if i stay in my current position though I will end up leaving the profession as feel disillusioned!

can anybody offer me some words of wisdom and advise!

Have you ever felt this way?

[/quote]

Was really interested to read your post as I feel the exact same! I'm happy in my current job but eventually want to go on to work in a referral practice but I fear a larger team meaning less of a bond with colleagues and I worry I won't be good enough or will find the extra pressure stressful. Good to read all the replies. Hopefully one day I'll feel confident enough to go for it! And I definitely think you should give it a go but totally understand the reservations

RE: Referral practice and making the transition!

Don't be scared take the leap. I did a few months ago. I rotate around the different departments each week.

My experience gave me the most supportive and welcoming team I have ever worked with. Everyone is more than happy to help, answer questions, and if anyone is struggling, training is adjusted to help each individual.

Feel free to message me if you want more info, but I'd definitely recommend going for it :)

RE: Referral practice and making the transition!

Go for it. I did it and never looked back. It turned me into s completely different nurse. It also personally developed me. Gave me a wealth of confidence, knowledge and skills.

RE: Referral practice and making the transition!

Hi, I echo what Rachel Woodcock says. Whenever I've worked in referral hospitals they have ALWAYS trained me to their standards and supported me to excel! So, the fact you are an RVN and keen to learn is really all the qualifications you need to apply at grass root level for them... Go for it!

RE: Referral practice and making the transition!

Hi

id say go for it! Absolutely no harm in applying and as far as I'm aware most referral practices will provide you with full training anyway so that you do things their way when you start so don't let this put you off! With regards to your skills, it's like riding a bike, you never lose them! Have faith in yourself and go for it! Life's way too short to be unhappy at work!
