The price I charge reflects the facts that

A) OOH shifts are undesirable - most people do not want to work OOH, or cant due to commitments

B) OOH have a greater potential to be difficult compared to other shifts due to the fact is often critical care/ emergency work demanding intensive nursing skills

C) OOH are often sole charge nurse shifts - greater risk and responsibility to you as a locum

Dont' be tempted to charge low for this type of work, its a high value shift that needs to command a good rate to be worth your time, expertise and inconvenience of being on standby. Circa £50 per on call shift (12-24 hours) + call out fee (of my standard hourly rate for that time of day) to me is more than reasonable.

Clever idea!

RE: Locum VN on call fee

I set mine very low when I agreed to be on call it was something like £10 or £15 because it usually meant doing the late night checks but if I got called out I usually negotiated a percentage of the procedure fee - which acted as a bit of a deterrent to some practices who quite frankly took the pee. I didn't mind fitting in with an on call rota but I did mind being the only nurse on call for a whole week!
