But i never for one minute thought it was a attack on me personally or trying to start a battle. I was just told that nurses are NOT allowed to draw up schedule two drugs or fill in the DD book but these two things are in the NPL so we do it in our training so I did not think it could be legal reasons or the RCVS starting nurses could not do it because like I stay we have to do it for the NPL, so why let students??

It was more of a rant because I am frustrated with vet nursing now, I locum and every practice I go to I am always told I cant do something that I trained hard for.

One poster commented that I cant take authority and work under VS direction and yes I know that but I have been to practices that have said I cant place IVs, take bloods, position for x-rays, consult, do dressings/bandaging, sedate + clip nails or dematt and so on....

So thats was the post was about as getting fed up of having skills taken away but also it depends how its said, like I just got nurses are NO longer aloud to draw up drugs so after working hard to gain a qualification it just seems like the profession is going backwards and rather than giving nurses more responsibility they are taking things away from us.

Thats why I asked for opinions on schedule three consult as just looking for some HOPE!

I am looking into leaving the profession next year to find a more valued career so yeah it was just a post from a disillusioned frustrated nurse!

I am just a rather expensive cleaner at the moment! Dont get me wrong cleaning is fine if I am getting to use my hard earned skills too! X

A good suggestion/warning apache - still, asking about the 'why' (and maybe being reassured it's for additional safety precautions (reasons of confidentiality like you detail)), will be enough for the OP to reflect and calm down... the main thing is for the OP to realise matters may not be an attack on them but something else entirely. Or, the policy could be reviewed if there's little sensible foundation to it...

What do *you* say Anon poster? :-)

Only vets are allowed access to our CD cupboard this includes drawing up and putting away. one of our vets is responsible for the ordering of these drugs as well. im quite happy with this. We are a 24hr practice so always have a Vet on site to access these drugs as they are required.

I think it all boils down to the usual problem - what people are taught they can do and what the practice want them to do are often two different things, but as its the practice who pays the wages....

Sometimes rules can be negotiable, sometimes they can't. Find out why the rule is there you may be surprised

Railing against accepted policy in a practice may do nothing to move nursing forwards - in fact it may well have the opposite effect in that it will put off practices wanting to employ somebody else of a similar calibre - and that is what I meant by choosing battles carefully. At the end of the day we all have to work together.

Middle ground to pour oil on a troubled water... Communicate your polite question why the policy has been set up. Look at the answer not from *you* being attacked but from the *practice* point of view. Does it make sense if you do that? If so, realise that sometimes it's politic to go with the flow... Or, as Sal the 1st says - go elsewhere.

it isn't *always* about a power battle...

That said, if you discover the policy has no real foundation and you might sensibly, and respectfully, debunk it. Try!

Also where meant to be accountable professionals, it's not so much drawing up injections that I am so bothered with. I am getting fed up now of forever being told you can't do this or that. After 4 years of training there are constantly limitations which is why I am sceptical anything will change.

If it is a practice policy that you can't draw certain drugs then accept it, there may be good reasons for it. If you cannot accept it move somewhere that fits in more with the way you would like to work.

Looking at the larger picture it seems to me your real problem is authority and as nurses work under the direction of a veterinary surgeon I fear this could become a big problem for you and the people you work alongside with the stance you are taking.

If you must pick a fight choose your battles carefully

Totally agree! If I never drew up a schedule 2 dose again I wouldn't be losing any sleep whatsoever! Just make sure that you choose the most inconvenient times for the vets to witness you drawing the doses.. See how quickly the 'rules' change ;)

yes have heard this before - and as I have come across people in practice who have abused I don't have a problem with it. I have no issue with a vet drawing these up and signing the book - that way if it don't tally I had nothing to do with it.

Worked at a practice where a nurse had misused Ketamine for recreational purposes so thereafter they implemented a double-check two person drawing up of the injectable drug or count out of non injectables policy on all DD drugs.

Never encountered similar at any other practice other than the dual signing/check in the DD register we all do.

Suggest you politely ask for the rationale behind the policy and then perhaps you can debunk it?!
