I was working as an RVN until recently when I had an injury resulting in tetraplegia. I absolutely loved my job and miss it more than anything. I will not be able to return to clinical practice but I was wondering if

RE: Advice please ...

I do feel for you so much. I am in a similar situation at the moment all though my illness is due to bone and liver cancer. I have been considering various situations my self and I m finding it very emotional and the hardest part of my illness to accept that I will never nurse again, or if I do in a very limited capacity. (it has been a big part of my life for 28years).

the options I have thought of so far

a - walking away completely

b I know there would be office work I could do i.e. protocols, insurance work, practice standards etc

but as a hard working nurse that would be difficult to stay focussed. and I would miss the client contact so much. I also guess it would depend on how your practice is laid out from a mobility side of things. We have stairs in our practice which for me may become an issue at a later date.

c as mentioned in a previous post insurance companies and vet helplines are always advertising and a lot are home based work . It maybe worth checking them out (it wouldn't be for me but everyone is different)

Are you still on the sick with you practice because if so it maybe worth having a meeting with them and asking if there is any other role they could offer you.

I am also considering contacting the BVNA legal department to ask how I would stand from a health and safety / insurance point of view.

I hope all goes well for you and you manage to reach a decision . Good luck

What about contacting animal charities? I've done some voluntary work from home in the past for various charities, things like writing protocols, advising on ways to improve standards, organising/promoting fundraisers and coordinating volunteers etc. Some of the insurance and food companies sometimes have RVNs in advisory roles? Vetfone? Research?
