I was wondering what views vet nurses hold on the effect brexit will have on our profession. Ive been working in practice a decent amount of time now and must say, that I think I have only encountered one or two EU nationals working within practice

RE: Brexit: How will it effect VNs?

I'm probably one of the very few VNs who would have been affected, if I was still in the UK. My dad is Spanish and I hold a Spanish passport in addition to my kiwi one. I've been living and working in the UK for 12 years but a few months ago my partner and I moved to NZ. I have to say, the Brexit vote really pushed our decision as to get Permanent Resident status I had to be able to give them every address and every job I've ever worked. After 7 years of locuming, often living on site, often for only 3 or 4 week stretches, I have no bloody chance of being able to remember or prove that. Despite the fact the Home office could just look at my NI records and see the evidence there, but they're unable to deal with that scenario, they need those boxes ticked. And we've all read the stories of eu nationals with more straightforward histories being denied residence and threatened with deportation. In many ways I'd have preferred to stay in the UK. I considered it my home even if others didn't feel I belonged there. I left my friends and my life there and reluctantly came back to a country where I have my family but no friends. We left our 7 year old St Bernard behind as we felt it wasn't fair or safe to transport him so far. Pretty well killed us to do it, even if he has found a home with incredible people who cater to his every whim. If it weren't for my partners job offer I would have dug in my heels and waited until the deportation order came but as timing would have it...

I suspect Brexit for vns will probably mean more work and stress, as the PREDICTED VS shortage would make life in practice difficult due to staff shortages, particularly in our more cosmopolitan areas where immigrant vets are more common. I think we could see a lot more burnout in our acceptably white middle class UK educated vets and could lead to them leaving the profession. The RCVS will probably approve a few more vet schools which will churn out more baby vets who will need guidance in their first years in practice. I'm not sure if those vet schools will take a while to reach the calibre of the ones we already have. I'll watch with interest. And quite a lot of sadness.

RE: Brexit: How will it effect VNs?

Thanks - still a prediction though...

I've studied economics (I had to - I used to be a bank manager, for my sins) and all I can say is that the study of economics is, by it's very nature, inexact - a forecast of what is thought to happen.

Although it can be based on what's gone before or even what is thought might happen with whatever 'evidence' is available at the time, it ain't factual. It never will be.

I reserve judgement on the success of Brexit until it after it has happened and bedded in.

Whatever happens, we democratically voted for it, so we need to support it/make the best of it - coz it's going to happen.

I think there is a lot of guessing what will happen and consequential panicking; nobody has any real idea yet. So I am going to wait until there's a directive/evidence and then make plans as needed.

The sooner the decisions are made, the better I think. People need certainties not limbo; you cannot plan well on What Ifs or Unknowns
