Hi Alison,

I know this post was originally last year but your comments were extremely helpful. I am jumping (into the deep end) into the world of locuming as a ltd company next year but also thinking of getting help from umbrella company too. Please could i PM you with email address for some more information on getting set up.

Yes, it is a bit confusing! Well, my answer is... It depends on your circumstances and those of the employer(s) you find to work for.

As you say, some will only pay thru an umbrella company and some, normally the charities such as PDSA only if you are referred directly by a recruiter they have an established relationship with. Here lies the rub; if signed up to a recruitment agency they will now, (since a law change), usually only enrol you as a Ltd Company status and decline to do so if a sole trader (self-employed). There are reasons why they now do this but am not gonna bore u with why here!

As for other practices hiring directly, they each have their own policy as to what they want. So, research first who wants what in the localities you want to offer work in and then make a decision if it sensible to become Ltd or not. I have found that once you have established a good relationship with a practice they don't care one way or the other; they want you, they'll have you. Then the decision is simply down to what makes more financial sense to you.

The mist important aspect once you have decided which way to go is to ensure you have a contract for each and every work placement. Keeping matters professional and protecting your interests is hugely sensible. It sets out what you and the practice expect of one another e.g. No early finish to the job if the practice decides it doesn't need you for a full week; or if there is an early finish it is in the contract that they will pay you for the originally agreed term. Business fit.

i have a template contract if you would like to see it. Adjust as required or use it as a springboard to create your own.

Many nurses now create their own business FB page or web link. There are companies that can help you prepare these to a highly professional standard. Others use a Linked In profile or... Use the locum site on vet nurse (plug, plug, plug Arlo Guthrie

So, summary. Depends!
