Im due to take the exam in october and I am a bit scared of failling... I did 2 MOSCEs to be able to see how it looks like and to practice. Its really great to hear.

In answer to the questions above

1 - focus on safety issues that would mean people or the patient are not safe

2 - 3 - dont over thing this too much!

4 - the choices given are usually pretty obvious

5 - I presume you are given a product with instructions to make up the correct dilution. so if maths v simple 1:100 or similar. so less maths, more understanding instructons

Does that help? Good Luck!

RE: Pre-registration OSCEs for overseas VN

Hi Girsl! thank you for the replies and the tips :)

Ive just watched your videos Jane, they are great, thank you for doing this :)
I could definetly resit the exam but it is quite expensive and I would feel so bad if I fail :(

I do have some questions:

1/ is there any key steps (the grey one) that make you fail the whole station if you miss them or fail them? It doesn't say on the book RCVS gives us...

2/ On the admission task, do we have to do a quick health check? How exactly do we explain the procedure? Do they expect very thechnical terms?

3/ on the discharge task, what to they expect as "post op feeding care" and "post op mental hygiene" ? Do we follow what we do at our own clinic or is there a RCVS protocol?

4/ For the ET tube, how do you choose the right one? I am usually pretty good at this but im always getting 3 of them ready in case...

5/ In the cleaning accommodation task, we have to make up the correct amount of disinfectant. Im not very good at math so any help on this? Same as scrubbing patient with 2% solution of chlorexidine.

So many questions, sorry! Hope you can answer them :)

Thank you,

Clem

RE: Pre-registration OSCEs for overseas VN

Hi,

I'm also an Aussie RVN and I did my OSCE's in Feb at Hartpury.

I found that I just memorised every task in the sample package they gave you. Just repetition, side notes at the side on what NOT to do (don't recap needles and making sure you get the Vet to check your medals before you give them and dispense them) and even doing things "the OSCE way" at work (which may take a lot longer but the sequence will stick in your brain.

Oh and learn all "the OSCE way" positioning for X-rays, they got me on that!

I also found Jane RVN on YouTube was a massive massive help and asking the British nurses you work with will still be helpful.

It all seems daunting at the moment but just remind yourself that you've come all this way to the UK so far (which is usually the hardest part) and if you do fail, you can always resit!

RE: Pre-registration OSCEs for overseas VN

It's great you're going to go on the register! If you're with a UK qualified nurse practising then that's a great help, if you cN find a clinical coach even better.

the exams aren't hugely different from the usual OSCEs so they should help. A CC can also help with exam technique, which is a big part of it!

Ive done some videos and articles to help. The videos are here in the gallery or www.JaneRVN.com for videos and some blogs.
